PROFESSIONAL TRAINER DEVELOPMENT, EU CONFERENCES AND DEBATES AND INSTITUTIONAL PR AND MEDIA TRAINING

NEGOTIATION SKILLS AND WORKING GROUP MEETINGS

EU project in Bosnia and Herzegovina (2008/09) included two intensive courses and one final joint Training of Trainers workshop. The courses were specially designed for civil-servants directly involved in negotiation processes in the context of EU. For more information on courses, see below.

1. Training on: EU Working Group Meetings 3 – 6 November 08

Trainers:

Colm Downes and David Rose of the British Council teaching centre in Brussels

Impact:

35 civil servants of BiH successfully completed the course and were awarded with certificates

Key learning aim:

To develop the communication skills required by chairs and national delegates to effectively manage EU working group meetings

Course content:

Debating EU topics using appropriate terminology
Chairing working group meetings
Developing standpoints and proposals
Presenting formal positions on EU matters
Developing the communication skills required for meetings, discussions and negotiations in the margins
Writing working group meeting invitations, agendas, position papers and state of play reports  

2. Train the Trainer session on EU Working Group Meetings 7 November 08

Trainers:

Colm Downes and David Rose of the British Council teaching centre in Brussels

Impact:

12 civil servants/potential trainers successfully completed the course and were awarded with certificates

Key learning aim:

Familiarisation with techniques of delivering Working Group Meetings in the Context of EU training

Course content:

1. The key methodological approach

2. Essential secondary techniques

Using video effectively
Giving language feedback
Staging and time targets

3. Excellent not average - how to achieve real learning

Memorable concepts and raising awareness
Teaching body language
The trainer as a coach

3. Effective Negotiation Skills within the EU 15 – 18 December 2008

Trainers:

Colm Downes and David Rose of the British Council teaching centre in Brussels

Impact:

30 civil servants of BiH successfully completed the course and were awarded with certificates

Key learning aim:

To prepare for and participate effectively in bilateral and multilateral negotiations

Course content:

1.Negotiation Theory

Negotiation styles and strategies
Distributive versus integrative negotiation bargaining
Behaviour of successful negotiators
The influence of cultural factors and non verbal communication

2. Diplomatic language for EU Negotiations

Expressing opinions – agreeing and disagreeing
Interrupting, clarifying and hedging
Trading concessions
EU jargon

4. Train the Trainer session on Effective Negotiation Skills 19 December 08

Trainers:

Colm Downes and David Rose of the British Council teaching centre in Brussels

Impact:

11 civil servants/potential trainers successfully completed the course and were awarded with certificates

Key learning aim:

Familiarization with methods and strategies for delivering the training sessions for bilateral and multilateral negotiation skills courses

Course content:

Teacher trainer methodologies
Adopting course material for local training content
To deliver training in English language for diplomacy
To deliver training in negotiation theory and practice

5. Final Joint Training of Trainers workshop, Sarajevo 20-22 May 2009

Trainers:

Colm Downes and Louise Chamberlain of the British Council Training Centre in Brussels

Impact:

22 civil servants of BiH and Montenegro successfully completed the course and were awarded with certificates

Key learning aims:

Familiarization with methodology and techniques of delivering courses in the context of EU-related skills.
