Who were the judges?

The panel of judges at the audition and at the final was comprised of leading figures from the world of science and media at each of the competitions.

Mag. Stefan Bernhardt

Mag. Stefan Bernhardt is the Head of the Public Relations department of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) since February 2004. He has experience as a university assistant and in higher education management. For nearly four years he was Head of the administrative department Information Management of the Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierung GmbH (Broadcasting and Telecommunications Regulations Corporation) in Vienna.

Dr. Martin Bernhofer
Dr. Martin Bernhofer is the Head of Department "Science, Education , Society" at the ORF radio (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) and therefore responsible for the science channel " science.ORF.at" and the science symposia on Radio Österreich 1. He is also lecturing media pedagogics at the University of Vienna. In 2000 he won the Austrian state prize for science journalism.

Univ. Prof. Dr. Christoph Kratky

Univ. Prof. Dr. Christoph Kratky studied Chemistry at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zürich (Switzerland). Presently he is professor for Physical Chemistry at the University of Graz, where he is leading the working group on Structural Chemistry. Kratky has been a member of the Austrian Academy of Science since 1998 and was elected President of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) in 2005.

Mag. Günther Mayr
Mag. Günther Mayr has been working as a journalist since 1986 and has previously worked for the ORF bureau in Carinthia, the magazine "Profil" and the daily newspapers "Kleine Zeitung" and "Der Standard". Since 1996 Mayr has been employed as science editor at the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ( ORF). From 2002 onwards he has been the Deputy Programme Director for the ORF science programmes "Modern Times" and "Newton". Since 2007 he is the Programme Director for the ORF's TV current science coverage.

Mag.a Julia Petschinka
Mag.a Julia Petschinka studied Physics at the University of Vienna. Her experimental thesis in the field of matter wave dealt with the question of the effect of Quantum Physics. She is a participant of the first SciMedia course and has a diploma in Science Communications. She held a position as scientific officer with Prof. Zeilinger dealing with issues related to the field of Quantum Cryptography. Since November 2003 project co-ordination and public relations for the working group Quantum technologies of the Austrian Research Centers - ARC, in the field smart systems. Board member of the SciCo society for science communications.

Mag. Lukas Wieselberg
Mag. Lukas Wieselberg has been responsible for the science internet channel of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF). He studied Philosophy and Political Science. After a short spell at an architects office he has mainly been engaged in journalistic work. He has been part of various editorial teams ranging from sports ("News", "Falter") and travel & recreation ("News") to New Media ("TV-Media", "Universum") and computers ("E-Media").

Dr. Gabriele Zuna-Kratky

Dr. Gabriele Zuna-Kratky has been Director of the Technical Museum in Vienna since January 2000. Apart from Management functions she is primarily dealing with fundraising and co-operation. Zuna-Kratky has a PhD in Philosphy and has been working for the Austrian Ministry for Education (Department School TV/Radio and media education). Some of her functions include Member of the Austrian Council for Research and Technology Development, Councillor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Member of the board of trustees of the German Museum Munich and Member of the foundation board of the Technical Museum Berlin.
