International

Launched in October 2009 by London 2012, the British Council and and the UK Arts Councils, Unlimited is the world’s largest programme celebrating arts, culture and sport by disabled and Deaf people as part of the cultural celebrations for London 2012. Unlimited International is the international strand of Unlimited and encourages collaboration between UK and international disabled and Deaf artists across all art forms.

Unlimited encourages collaborations and partnerships between disability-lead arts organisations, disabled and Deaf artists, producers, and mainstream organisations to celebrate the inspiration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The programme, with a total fund of £3m, is principally funded by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor, and is delivered in partnership between London 2012, Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Wales, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the British Council.

In March 2010 the first ten UK commissions for Unlimited were announced. Round 2 has now produced a further 13 new commissions of which two, with support from the British Council, will see collaboration between UK artists and international artists from South Africa. The deliberation panel, comprising representatives from LOCOG, UK Arts Councils and British Council, UK and international disability arts sectors, took place in December 2010. Of the ten applications received for international commissions, the following were successful:

David Toole and Lucy Hind (UK) and Remix Dance Company (South Africa)
Dance

David Toole and Lucy Hind are working with acclaimed UK choreographer Liam Steel, South African born composer and performer Neo Muyanga and UK performer and musician Dominic Lawton in collaboration with Remix Dance Company. Together they will create a new integrated dance work, , which will reflect the spirit of both cultures, developing understanding and inspiring creativity.

Rachel Gadsden (UK) and Nondumiso Hlwele and Bambanani Women's Group (South Africa)
Combined Arts

British visual artist Rachel Gadsden, will collaborate with South African artist and activist Nondumiso Hlwele and the Bambanani Women’s Group. Their multi-stranded commission - - will include an exhibition of large-scale visual artswork, a film, an exhibition and a live multi-media theatrical performance. Sharing a powerful sensibility and complicated life-giving medical regimes, the women are united by their ability to survive, and their shared desire to communicate important messages about human fragility through art.

These commissions will be ready for presentation in the UK as part of London 2012. As part of the legacy of Unlimited International, it is hoped that this work will tour internationally from October 2012.

We will announce the successful applications from the third round of commissions in July 2011.
