Performing Arts - FAQs

... for Dance, Drama and Music enquiries.

1. How can I find out more about the performing arts scenes around the world?
First try our overseas offices and click on the Arts pages. You could also have a look at Visiting Arts’ country directories, UNESCO’s culture pages or the Informal European Theatre Meetings.
2. I AM AN ARTIST LIVING IN THE UK. How can I promote my arts work overseas?

See our support and funding pages for advice on making contacts with overseas organisations, promoters, venues and festivals. The PAYE directory is very useful for finding international contacts. Should you secure an invitation, please ask your overseas partner to contact the British Council office in their country.

3. Where can I obtain information to help with organising international tours?
See our Red Tape section on visas, tax, freight and other official arrangements involved in working overseas. We can also help with recommended per diem subsistence rates for you and your company. For more information about who we work with and how, see How We Work in Dance, Drama and Music, available in full as a downloadable pdf.
4. What support is available for UK youth groups and amateur companies who are interested in working overseas?

We don’t generally support the work of youth groups or amateur companies overseas. Here are some places which do:

5. What is the Performing Arts Department policy for cultural diversity and inclusiveness as related to arts work?

A key focus of our work is to reflect the contemporary British experience in all its diversity. We approach this through a range of activities:

  • Links - We are well linked with key organisations and projects that specifically advocate representing cultural diversity in the arts. We receive regular publications that keep us in touch with current UK developments in diverse performing arts scenes.
  • Advice - We ensure good communication between our office in London and our offices in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast to ensure that all regions of the UK are represented in our work.
  • Specific focuses - Often our work developing projects in partnership with overseas arts managers and their partners has a specific focus on diversity. This might take the shape of supporting artists and companies for festivals/events focusing on diversity; or of linking artists who are working with aspects of their varied cultural heritages.
  • Discussion - Keeping our overseas offices and partners updated on the UK drama, dance and music scene involves being at the forefront of thinking in the UK.
  • Attitude - Our projects often approach this goal indirectly as it's an all-encompassing aspect of our work. For instance, our international radio show The Selector showcases new music from all over the music circuit. Any UK-based artist is able to send in examples of their work for potential inclusion.
6. Where can I find a list of UK companies who are able to take work overseas?
See our Performance in Profile directory of UK companies and artists who are currently creating interesting work available for international touring. You could also contact the British Council office in your country who will tell you more about possibilities for partnership and collaboration.
7. Where can I study performing arts in the UK?
See our education pages for dance, drama and music. Our general British Council Education pages have more information on all sectors, as has EducationUK.
8. Where can I find more information on the Performing Arts scene in the UK?
