ARTISTIC POLICY
Theatre Babel aims to liberate some of the world’s greatest plays, igniting the imagination of artists to explore the truth and release the extraordinary in classic myths and dramas. The company constantly redefines its approach to creating work and seeks new ways to surprise itself and its audiences. Babel has presented its work variously in ancient Greek amphitheatres, black boxes and the main stages of national theatres across the world.
REVIEW EXTRACTS
‘I’ve seldom seen lawlessness put across with such black clarity... unexpectedly moving… not to be missed.’ The Sunday Times ()
‘Full of pace, energy and smart timing… excellent cast… a fabulous script.’ The Telegraph ()
‘Theatre Babel… the great style house of the Scottish stage.’ Mail on Sunday
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
By William Shakespeare. Macbeth is a masterpiece of violence, guilt and the quest for power. Babel’s version is a brilliantly realised staging described by The Scotsman as ‘a dark, elegant, intense and dignified affair… frightening and compelling’. (90 mins, 15 on the road.)
By Ben Jonson. Venice 1606. The beautiful and debauched party capital of Europe. A deliciously vicious satire of a dazzling and godless world ripe with greed, lust and ambition. (90 mins, approx 13 on the road.)
or By Moliere, adapted by Liz Lochhead. An electrifying, ribald and wonderfully witty new version from one of Scotland’s most celebrated playwrights, known for her dazzling adaptations of Moliere’s work. (90 mins, 12 on the road.)
WRAP-AROUND
Working with local audiences and increasing the understanding of how we work, and why, is an integral part of what we do. For example, projects have included a three-month residency at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh and teaching at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama; outreach workshops and performance-based discussion sessions with young aspirant theatre-makers in urban and rural Philippines, and technical masterclasses in Kuala Lumpur. We create wrap-around educational and outreach work for all our projects, drawing on the skills of our core team and collaborators who have taught a range of performance techniques and styles including mask and chorus work; lighting, sound, stage management and arts management.
