ARTISTIC POLICY
The Mark Bruce Company was formed in 1991 as a vehicle for the inimitable and uncompromising dance theatre of Mark Bruce. Its work pushes the boundaries of style and expectations, while remaining rooted in a strong choreographic language. The company creates work for traditional and unconventional venues and explores innovative, venue-specific, and unexpected presentational formats.
REVIEW EXTRACTS
‘British contemporary dance needs to move forward, and the efforts of choreographers like Bruce are to be cheered.’ The Observer ()
‘There is a mysterious undercurrent of ancient history, as well as surprising tenderness and eroticism. There’s a flicker of narrative, too, which comes and goes in the most tantalising way.’ The Independent ()
‘This is a compelling evening of dance theatre that wittily and nightmarishly rattles the skeletons at the bottom of our collective unconscious.’ The Guardian ()
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
A love story both tragic and tender, performed in the round to the music of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Grinderman. (20 mins, 2 on stage, 4 on the road.)
A duet in two parts performed to the music of Debussy and Tcherepnin – the first takes place in a traditional ballroom, the second mirroring it in a contemporary setting. (12 mins, 2 on stage, 4 on the road.)
A duet performed in the round to music by The White Stripes – a visceral and immediate performance experience, with the audience separated from the performers only by a rope. (10 mins, 2 on stage, 4 on the road.)
FUTURE PRODUCTION
A full evening in the round, with a soundtrack including Sparklehorse, Queens of the Stone Age and György Ligeti – examining reflections of the Gods in our selves and how love and war interconnect, fuel and govern our behaviour. (70 mins, 7 on stage, 10 on the road.)
