ARTISTIC POLICY
Sonia Sabri Company (SSCo) presents Kathak dance in a fresh new light. The company creates exciting, relevant work for modern audiences by integrating contemporary ideas and innovations into productions. Live music is a key element, used in new and surprising ways. SSCo’s diverse work includes: Modern Classical, Urban Kathak, and Sufi influenced Kathak. Artistic Director Sonia Sabri was recognised for her adventurous choreography through commission for The Place Prize for Dance and in her win of the Bonnie Bird New Choreography Award in 2007.

CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
A high impact kaleidoscope of hip-hop aesthetics with Kathak. Dancers of diverse artistic backgrounds, a spoken word artist, beatboxer and tabla artist celebrate the extraordinary musical and the visual potential of the human body. (70 mins, no interval, 7 on stage,, 8 on the road.)
A modern classical celebration of the invigorating energy of Kathak, with live music inspired by the spirit of Gypsy folk and the passion of Qawwals. (90 mins plus interval, 4 dancers, 4 musicians, 10 on the road.)
A programme of classical solo Kathak dance in Sabri’s highly acclaimed personal style, with live music. (90 mins plus interval, 1 dancer, 3 musicians, 5 on the road.)
FUTURE PRODUCTION
Site-specific performance, minimum of 100 dancers (of different abilities, experiences, cultural backgrounds and ages) in busy city spaces. Available spring 2011.
WRAP-AROUND
An extensive range of wrap-around activities are available: post-show discussions, workshops and lecture demonstrations that offer insight into company productions, the history, tradition and technique of Kathak dance and music. Creative residencies and masterclasses are available and tailored to suit the requirements of the participants/venue. The company has experience working with all ages and abilities, including those with additional needs. Theme-based/repertory workshops around productions are available, including dance and music with influence from Islamic traditions including Qawwali and Sufi poetry. Sonia Sabri is also noted for her articulate discussion-based presentations and is available to deliver seminars.
