REVIEW EXTRACTS
‘An incomparable story teller… Moorthy is so sumptuously watchable that its easy to forget there is only one of her on stage.’ The Guardian ()
‘A piece of intelligent, engaging and provocative theatre… its central message lingers long after the curtain.’ The British Theatre Guide ()
‘Rarely have I seen such talent or such intimate contact with the pulse of this nation.’ The Independent ()
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
The family village in Asia is no fun for bored British teenager Nasreen. But the mystical power of henna leads to unexpected events. Based on real stories from Muslim women, this is an evocative story of homecoming, adventure, and one girl’s journey to understanding her mother. (75 mins, no interval, 4 on stage, 6 on the road, suitable for ages 7+.)
‘How is one persons healthy glow, another’s social stigma?’ This one-woman show about skin exposes colour prejudices within people’s own communities. From South African albino to skin-bleaching Indian bride, Rani Moorthy transforms into funny and poignant characters who cannot hide, or hide from their skin. (60 mins, no interval, 1 on stage, 2 on the road, suitable for ages 12+, mild course language.)
A worldwide tour of Britain’s favourite food, six cooks reveal intimate stories while cooking their own special sauces for the audience. From India to England, from Trinidad to Malaysia, identity, nationalism, fertility and hunger is explored with razor-sharp comic observation and moving characterisation. (85 mins, no interval, 1 on stage, 4 on the road, suitable for ages 12+, mild course language.)
WRAP-AROUND
Post-show discussions with writer and performer. Workshops are available that explore the themes of the plays and their creative process, relating these to the individual participant. Participants are encouraged to explore their own experiences, identities and memories to unlock their own creativity. The workshops are based around creative writing, storytelling, and drama. They are suitable for non-professional groups aged 12+, and will be tailored to meet the needs of the specific groups (eg mixed abilities, languages, non-drama participants).
