ARTISTIC POLICY
Artistic Director Lindsey Butcher set up Gravity & Levity in 2003 to develop the creative potential of aerial dance. It presents work that re-defines what and where a dance floor can be, both for the audience and the performers, and offers an alternative perspective on traditional aesthetics in dance and circus.

REVIEW EXTRACTS
‘Woman and wood whirl round each other like lovers, and with such beauty and precision that it catches at the heartstrings.’ The Times

‘To a chilled soundtrack by Daniel Weaver, Butcher curls beneath the timber, somnolent, graceful and concentrated. It’s not a stunt, it’s a love story.’ Sunday Times

‘A floating exploration of physical human poetry by exquisitely effortless dancers... They soared as masters of the element.’ Southern Daily Echo

CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
An imaginative new aerial performance for outdoor spaces, created in collaboration with The Dream Engine. In a 3D ring of swaying, flexible poles, the piece begins as a contemplative solo and builds to an exuberant quartet that sees the performers swoop, soar and slice though the air. (35 mins, can do up to 3 shows in 1 day, 4 on the road.)

A driven and fierce aerial dance duet on a vertical wall. Power and strength are juxtaposed with ease and surrender. Performed indoors or outdoors. (20 mins, 2 dancers, 1 crew on the road.)

WRAP-AROUND
Gravity & Levity’s performing company comprises some of the UK’s finest specialist teachers and offers a broad, accessible and ambitious programme of workshops, residencies and after-show discussions that can be based around specific dance and aerial techniques, collaborative process of making work, be creative or equipment-based, and can form a one-off event or work towards an ongoing project.
