ARTISTIC POLICY
Cardboard Citizens has forged a reputation for innovative, interactive, social theatre. It is the only UK professional theatre company working with homeless and ex-homeless people, including refugees and asylum seekers, as creators, participants, and audience. The stories this experience reveals, together with the company’s roots in forum theatre, yield a distinctive theatricality and authentic aesthetic.

REVIEW EXTRACTS
‘Rare theatrical treasure.’ Daily Telegraph ()

‘Extraordinary… I was utterly gripped by this marvellous production… Cardboard Citizens have woven a fascinating play.’ The Guardian ()

‘The production is ragged and rough, but its approach is not unsuited to Büchner’s fractured writing, and its threadbare aesthetic is poignantly unlovely. Raw but rewarding.’ The Guardian ()

CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
An epic WWII thriller with a narrative that crosses time and territory to find answers to questions of identity and matters of life and death. (120 mins, one interval, 10 actors, 17 on the road.)

An exploration on the down-and-out in a unique take on George Büchner’s classic play that uses forum theatre to explore issues surrounding mental health. (90 mins, no interval, 6 actors, 10 on the road.)

FUTURE PRODUCTION
is the first in a three-year cycle of plays about forgotten histories, all based on real events in which an ordinary person affects a bigger sweep of history. Future productions will be announced on the company’s website.

WRAP-AROUND
Workshops based on forum theatre and the work of the late Augusto Boal led by Adrian Jackson, a leading expert on the theatre of the oppressed, and a well-travelled teacher and speaker. Additional forums, post-show discussions, debates and seminars can be devised around the themes of each production. For example, inspired The Coroner’s Inquests – two public inquiries into the death of a man that never was. Audiences join actors, forensic scientists and historians in investigating the truth about the identity of a body known as Major Martin and its use in a bizarre wartime scam. Ages generally 12+ for amateur and professional audiences
