Royal Scottish National Orchestra

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra's (RSNO) award-winning education programme introduces classical music in a fresh and innovative way to Scotland. Working with all sections of the community, irrespective of age or ability, the RSNO believes that appreciation and understanding of music is gained through active participation in music-making.

Inspired by the RSNO's rich repertoire, projects are devised specifically for each group involved, with particular care taken to link closely with the curriculum requirements of schools. The diversity of work undertaken spans nursery school visits to in-depth composition projects. There are specific projects for those with special needs, and visits to day centres and homes for the elderly. In addition, masterclasses, orchestral coaching and teacher training sessions are initiated by the department. Special concerts for pre-fives, primary schools and secondary schools are now a fixed part of the orchestra's education work.

RSNO education projects span the length and breadth of Scotland, from Dumfries to Shetland. Partnerships with local authorities ensure projects link to social inclusion policies and can be offered free of charge to the people who will benefit most from the experience.

The annual RSNO ScottishPower Schools Prom concerts are now the biggest music education event in the UK, working with over eight thousand school children and teachers all in less than two months. In total, last year the RSNO's education programme reached over twenty two thousand children and adults, often working with people who have little or no access to classical music.
