Upcoming Events
As part of Shubbak - a celebration of contemporary culture from across the Arab world - LIFT will present one of the Gulf Stage productions at the ICA.

is an award-winning theatre production from Qatar that draws together a series of stories that explore human conflict, artistic freedom and the struggle to assert one’s individual identity.

This event is the UK premiere screening of the production, and will also include a panel discussion with Gulf Stage’s creative team exploring issues such as 'what kind of theatre are young artists in the Arab world making?' and 'how are they voicing their hopes, thoughts and concerns?'

Gulf Stage - The Project
Gulf Stage brings theatre from the Gulf to a wider audience, utilising cutting edge UK innovation and digital practice.

This unique digital project was conceived by the British Council in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage (Qatar), The Cultural Development Centre (Qatar) and Digital Theatre (UK) with an aim to develop and promote the contemporary performing arts sector in the Middle East.

Six original theatre productions from the participating countries of the Gulf Co-operation Council Youth Theatre Festival (GCCYTF, Doha, Qatar 2010) were digitally captured, alongside a professional development workshop in digital film making, in a pioneering initiative which represents current contemporary Gulf cultural heritage and safeguards it digitally for future generations.

The Festival was part of Doha Arab City of Culture 2010 and ran over 6 nights, each featuring a different country: UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait. The audiences for the productions included Ministry representatives and high-profile cultural individuals from both Qatar and the other participating countries.

Gulf Stage - Online
All of the six productions and a specially commissioned documentary about the Gulf Stage project have been translated into English and are now available to view for free on a dedicated section of the Digital Theatre website.

'Part of the British Council’s new digital strategy for the arts focuses on enabling the co-creation of exciting new artistic content between the UK’s leading artists and creatives, and their contemporaries in the region. This original digital content can then be innovatively shared, developed and distributed between partners, artists and audiences on different platforms, opening up rich cultural conversations on a global level.' Deborah Dignam, Drama & Dance Adviser, British Council.

Gulf Stage - Offline
The winning productions from Qatar and Kuwait were officially screened at a high profile event attended by the Minister of Culture and the British Ambassador to Qatar in Doha on 9-10 Dec 2010. We hope to find opportunities to screen UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait's productions in their respective countries. The screenings will again be supported by masterclasses, workshops and/or critical debates and symposiums. We also aim to screen the collective catalogue in the UK.
