Nick Danziger’s new photographic exhibition, - a selection of images taken in the year of Ethiopia’s millennium celebrations - will be on display at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) from 2 September 2009.
Nick was commissioned by the British Council to document the Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Christian Church as they prepared to celebrate their calendar's Millenium on 11 September 2007. The Church is at the heart of one of the oldest surviving Christian communities in the world, and is a source of wonder and curiosity to many in the West.
Travelling several thousand kilometres across Ethiopia, from the central highlands - where he captured daily life on mountain-top churches - to a pilgrimage to the Somali region of Ethiopia, Nick’s innate curiosity and talent for uncovering a story with compassion allowed him to give voice to a world that exists seemingly out of time.
Featuring twenty-two stunning black and white images; from an elderly calligrapher writing in the ancient classical language of Ge'ez, to children studying scriptures in the shade of a tree, drummers practising their art, and vertiginous views of mass prayer gatherings; the exhibition captures the Church’s breathtaking antiquity and sheds light on an ancient culture facing new challenges.
Nick Danziger said of his experience: 'My journey through Christian Ethiopia was extraordinary for its mystical intensity, for the adventure in travelling to rarely visited valleys and gaining access to places and ceremonies that had not previously been photographed.'
Famous for his ability to get behind the scenes and under the skin of his subjects, Danziger has photographed people from across the widest spectrum including young inmates in psychiatric institutions in Afghanistan, to former Prime Minister Tony Blair as he made the historic decision to take Britain to war in Iraq.
This is the first time that Danziger's photographs of Christian Ethiopia are being exhibited in Britain. Philip Marsden, the noted travel-writer on Ethiopia, has provided the captions to the photographs, which record the resilience of Ethiopia's Christian community as Danziger's camera lingers on the individuals from which it is made up. A selection of historic photographs of Ethiopia from the RGS-IBG’s Collection will also be on display alongside the exhibition.
