As part of its China-UK: Connections through Culture programme, the British Council will be running a ten-day study tour for design curators to China in October 2010.
Design is a subject that many museums and galleries in China are keen to develop. A number of new spaces and programmes are in development and there is interest in developing both exhibition content and curatorial expertise in design (including architecture, fashion, graphics, product, furniture, digital).
This study tour will include museums, galleries and festivals with design programmes as well as organisations that are seeking to develop a programme in design. All organisations are interested in collaboration and partnership with UK organisations.
After running an open application process we can announce that the UK curators chosen to visit China are:
Alice Black, Deputy Director, Design Museum, London
Tanya Bryan, Development Director, Design Initiative, Manchester
Clare Cumberlidge, Director, Clare Cumberlidge & Co. London
Liz Farrelly, Curator, Brighton
Kate Goodwin, Architecture Curator, Royal Academy of Art, London
Melanie Kidd, Head of Exhibitions, Hub Centre for Craft and Design, Sleaford
Sarah Mann, Assistant Curator, Somerset House, London
Darragh Murphy, Researcher, PDR, Cardiff
Jana Scholze, Curator of Modern Furniture and Product Design, V&A, London
Tamsie Thomson, Director RIBA London, London
Katy West, Curator, Glasgow
The detail of the programme is currently in development, but it will include visits to some of the following:
Each visit will include a meeting with senior officials and adequate time to view galleries. The tour will be accompanied by British Council staff and interpreters, and a briefing on working with Chinese counterparts will be provided at the British Council in London before departure.
