Global ChangeMakers

The mission of the Global Changemakers programme is to connect and empower youth worldwide to catalyse positive social change.

What Is Global Changemakers?

Global Changemakers are a select group of young people from around the world who have demonstrated a significant track record of achievement in their local communities through social entrepreneurship, community activism and voluntary work. Once part of the global network, GCMs share knowledge, ideas and best practices as well as work individually and collectively on projects that directly impact the lives of people in their local communities. The initiative promotes cultural understanding and dialogue among youth and is a key cultural relations offering of the organisation

How is this achieved?

The Global Changemakers program has many components to succeed in creating a powerful global network for action that provides opportunities to share experiences and help young people make differences in their communities, countries and regions, such as:

Bring together young activists to debate issues, develop action plans and act on these plans as a global network.

Develop the skills of the participants in relevant areas such as project management and fundraising.

Provide opportunities and resources otherwise beyond their reach, enabling them to become global Changemakers.

Support participants in developing and running community action programmes (CAPs), ensuring that there is cooperation between those programmes and participants.

Furthermore, by giving access to global platforms such as WEF and UN events, Global Changemakers gives participants a voice to engage with global leaders.

Community Action Projects (CAPs)

Community Action Projects or CAPs: Perhaps the most integral part of Global Changemakers is that the Changemakers are invited to design and run their own community projects. They are supported by the British Council by means of seedcorn funding and mentoring. Currently there are over 35 CAPs all over the world in several areas of activism such as Human rights, Climate Change, Peace, Poverty relief, Youth work, Women’s rights among others.

Change Maker’s Global Youth Summit 2011 in London

In November 2011, Clara Palazzolo, together with 60 other enthusiastic and engaged young people from all over the world, was selected to attend the Change Maker’s Global Youth Summit in London. The purpose of this yearly summit is for young people to share best practices, in order to address issues such as human rights, poverty, HIV´s and many others. Clara focused on Climate Change.

At the Summit she had useful workshops such as Fundraising, Media and the challenging Elevator Pitch, in which Clara was trained to deliver a specific message in exactly thirty seconds.

This Summit was a life changing experience for I met the most diverse, interesting young people with amazing projects and the most inspiring, successful ideas. I made great friends and felt, and still feel, that I am a part of a new, wonderful family, said Clara about her experience.

Clara is working on a project called Econect, with other 12 Changemakers from different countries, such as Kosovo, Gambia, Macedonia, Filipinas, with the aim of raising awareness on environmental issues using alternative and funny methods.

Clara gave a presentation of the British Council´s Global Changemakers Programme before an audience of 480 secondary school children.
