Rivers of the World

Rivers of the World fosters a better understanding between young boys and girls from different countries through art, education and culture. It’s an international and cross-curricular project involving 14 countries: United Kingdom, Brazil, China, Hungary, India, Mexico, France, Egypt, Thailand, United States, Turkey, Korea, South Africa and Argentina.

Rivers of the World focuses on rivers and their culture, history and preservation. The River Plate in Argentina is one of the new rivers participating in the project, represented by six schools in Buenos Aires.

Each River Plate school has a partner school in London. Partner schools develop a programme of intercultural exchange having Rivers of the World at its core.

The London schools are:

In 2011 and 2012, each school works with a group of 20 pupils in the creation of a single artwork inspired in one of the six river themes which are part of the project: river of life, polluted river, resourceful river, working river, river city, river culture.

The schools’ artworks will be displayed at the Thames Festival in September 2011 and 2012, and in Buenos Aires, in November 2011 and 2012. The Thames Festival is the largest outdoor arts festival in London which celebrates the city and its river. It aims at bringing people on the Thames riverside walkways, bridges and other public places, and encouraging them to participate.

Professional artists Carmen Rocher, Mariano Ferrante and Gabriel Glaiman will share their creativity and expertise with the River Plate schools in the development of the artworks. They are responsible for inspiring the pupils and exploring new art techniques.

In November 2010, Thames Festival representatives and the London school teachers visited the Buenos Aires schools. They had the chance to meet local teachers and pupils, and learn more about the River Plate, its history, geography and culture.
