The British Council's artistic collaboration work between the UK and Africa is known as ‘New Work New Audiences’. The programme is all about the sharing of best and new artistic practice between the UK and Africa. We hope to share some of the most stimulating contemporary work being created in the UK and will have a strong emphasis on joint ventures and collaboration between artists and arts organisations from the UK and Africa.

The British Council have a long history of supporting UK and African arts exchange with previous projects such as the award winning ‘Britain and South Africa Dancing’ or the musical collaboration between pianists Joanna MacGregor and the late Moses Molelekwa. Through this programme we will build on previous work, providing opportunities to artists and arts organisations in Africa interested in developing lasting relationships with the UK.

In 2011/12 we will be running the New Work New Audiences programme in just three countries in Sub-Saharan Africa; Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Planned activity include:

New music collaboration between Nigerian and UK artists
Fashion photography exhibition and workshops in Lagos
Playwright workshops in collaboration with Wits Theatre and the Department of Arts and Culture
Showcase of hip hop dance from the London Sadlers Wells ‘Breakin Conventions’ festival in South Africa
New music collaboration between  South African Young Jazz Musician of the Year Bokani Dyer and UK jazz musician Soweto Kinch
