ARTISTIC POLICY
Ray Lee is an artist, composer and performer who makes music that moves. Over the past 25 years, he has made work that includes performance, installation, composition and photography. His work investigates his fascination with the hidden world of electromagnetic radiation and in particular how sound can be used as evidence of invisible phenomena. He is interested in how science and philosophy represent the universe and his work questions orthodoxies that emerge and submerge according to currently fashionable trends.
REVIEW EXTRACTS
‘An amazing spectacle.’ The Daily Telegraph
‘A thrumming, choral soundscape… bees buzzed, church bells chimed and the harmonies of cosmic spheres lapped round my meanderings.’ Glasgow Herald
‘A choir of rotating sirens, their strident voices congealing into a thick mutating chord that trapped listeners in its sticky flux.’ The Wire
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
Siren A whirling, spinning spectacle of mechanical movement, sound and light. Silent performers move within a forest of metal tripods, whose rotating loudspeakers weave an ethereal, hypnotic sound world.
Swarm Inspired by the sound of bees and insects, Swarm is a kinetic sound installation designed for atriums that activates and enlivens a space with movement and sound.
Force Field A 30-minute performance within an installation of kinetic sculptures that can be tailored to a range of venues
FUTURE PRODUCTIONS
Swing Transforms its location into a giant human-controlled sound machine. Swinging above the heads of the audience, an array of loudspeakers hum and crackle with electronic noise and sound.
The Archive A series of strange electronic noise machines whose purpose has been lost or obscured is put on display, under the careful eye of the archivist.
Sound Houses A sonic analogue of a lighthouse, the sound houses bathe the landscape in slowly rotating rays of noise. Intended for spectacular outdoor locations.
WRAP-AROUND
Ray Lee regularly lectures in sound and performance and is happy to give talks and workshops in connection with his performances and can contribute to discussions and symposia on related subjects.
