Nigel Charnock

ARTISTIC POLICY
Nigel Charnock’s work is about ‘performance’ in the widest sense: unbound from the traditions of established artforms, he works from an improvisational base and crosses freely from dance to drama, synthesising dance with music, song and stand-up style comedy. Shows are characterised by Charnock’s unique blend of morbid irony, furious entertainment and black comedy.

REVIEW EXTRACTS
‘Uncensored, usually high-pitched, excesses… highly entertaining and outrageously self-indulgent… Mad, bad, but unquestionably alive.’ The Times (Stupid Men)

‘Feverishly talented… a core of discipline, a liberating energy.’ The Times (Frank)

‘So unusual, so witty – one does not stop being amazed.’ Frankurter Neue Presse (Frank)

CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
Stupid Men Improvisation and performance project for four men directed by Nigel Charnock. Each performance is a unique experience for the performers and the audience, a completely free improvisation, and an act of raw, fearless theatre. Contains material of an adult nature. (60–70 mins, 4 on stage, 6 on the road.)

Nothing A new solo show by and for Charnock, structured around a set of 10 songs; some well known and others new. The songs will provide the core framework and structure for a performance that is otherwise improvised and that explores the notion that nothing is everything.

FUTURE PRODUCTION
Rite and Rong A re-imagining of The Rite of Spring, for an ensemble of seven male performers. The release of a hell bent, heaven sent desire to tell it like it is with seven sweaty male bodies and a searing text. A story of male sexuality, compassion, aggression, sacrifice, love at first sight and death

WRAP-AROUND
Nigel Charnock offers a full spectrum of teaching and training suitable for advanced level students and practising artists, including creative residencies and workshops that give an insight into his creative methodology and unique style of performance.

RECENT INTERNATIONAL WORK
2009 Austria (Stupid Men), Poland (Happy), Israel and Sweden (workshops), Canada (Le Fou Glorieux)
2008 Italy (Stupid Men), Canada (Fever), Israel, Canada, Poland, Czech Republic (teaching residency)
