Service-Learning Floor: 2008-2009

The mission of the Service-Learning Floor is to serve as a dynamic residential community that cultivates a sense of civic and community responsibility and an appreciation for learning among its residents.  Residents will take ownership of this community by planning and participating in innovative, educational, and challenging programming that will prepare residents for a culminating service trip over spring break.Paticipants will be involved in both service and experiential learning opportunities afforded to them over the course of the year.  Prospective residents need to have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in order to live on the floor.  Each student living on the Service-Learning Floor is guaranteed housing in the Suites.LOCATION:
The Service-Learning Floor is located on the second floor of Tigress HallLEADERSHIP:

Residence Life Coordinator: Craig Berger GOVERNANCE:
Service-Learning Advisory Council (SLAC), composed of two Resident Assistants and a representative from each suite on the floor.  Elections take place at the organizational meeting held the first week of the fall semester.

REQUIREMENTS:

A.  Community Service

* Complete at least two hours of general service per month if traveling to Gulfport, MS, or complete ten hours of general service a month if unable to make the trip.
* Interview a leader of one area social service agency each semester and submit a reflection paper.

B. Experiential Learning - Alternative Spring Break

* Participation in the campus's Alternative Spring Break to Gulfport, Mississippi to assist with cleanup from Hurricane Katrina (March 8-13, 2009.)
* Participate in fifteen hours of programming related to the trip - fundraising, preparatory programs, and informational programming (speakers, etc.)

C. Additional Requirements

* Be in good conduct standing with the University while living on the floor
* Each prospective resident must have 24 credit hours at the end of the Spring 2008 semester.
* Residents living on the Service-Learning Floor must follow all University regulations as outlined in the Terms, Conditions, and Regulations in the housing contract and the Guide to Residence Living.

INTERESTED?

To be a resident on the floor during the 2008-2009 school year, students need to do the following:

  1. Request Suite housing online via http://www.eliving.psu.edu by NOON on Thursday, January 17, 2008.
  2. Print, sign, and return the Service-Learning Floor Contract to Reed 115, Office of Student Affairs by 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 29, 2007
