Residence Life Program

The Vision of the Office of Residence Life is to provide a comprehensive, high-quality living/learning community that distinguishes itself as a significant contributor to the academic mission of the College and the holistic development of the student.

The Mission of the Office of Residence Life is to foster the development of a student-centered learning community that enhances student development through supporting and advocating for student rights, promoting civic and community responsibility, and providing a safe, diverse, and challenging living and learning environment.

This mission is further defined through the following five learning and four service outcomes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Students will develop an appreciation of all members of the campus community through the exploration of a variety of perspectives.

  • Students will contribute to a global community through the practices of civility, respect, and civic responsibility.

  • Students will understand and demonstrate the need for excellent stewardship of resources including financial, natural, personal, physical, and spiritual.

  • Students will further develop a value system that will contribute to the student's ability to make healthy and responsible decisions and choices.

  • Students will develop effective communication, leadership, and problem solving skills.

SERVICE OUTCOMES

  • Students will identify the Office of Residence Life as a safe environment for them to discuss relevant issues, experiment, explore, learn, and grow.

  • The Office of Residence Life will provide a seamless system of resources and opportunities for success and growth.

  • The Office of Residence Life strives to gain a better understanding and a deeper commitment to our fundamental mission, values, and purpose with an emphasis on developing the whole student through the development of a safe, comfortable, and supportive yet challenging living/learning environment.

The Residence Life program at all locations of Penn State recognizes that the environment has an impact on student development, that the University has the resources and commitment to structure the environment in ways that enhance that development, and that the on-campus living experience is a significant aspect of the student's total education.

Each floor in the residence halls and suites and each student apartment building has one resident assistant (RA) who serves as the primary resource and aide for the residents on that floor or in that building. RAs are carefully selected and trained in order that they may best fulfill the needs of the residents with whom they work.

Residence Life is administered by the associate director of Student Affairs; the assistant director of Residence Life; three professional, live-in coordinators; and the forty-two student resident assistants.
