Dr. Syed Saad Andaleeb, professor of marketing, has been invited to speak in the South Asia Program's fall seminar series at Cornell University November 29. He will discuss his activities and accomplishments during his past year as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Bangladesh.
Dr. Daniel Barnard, lecturer in music and director of the Logan Music Series, will take part next month in a reading session sponsored by VocalEssence, a St. Paul based choir, directed by Phillip Brunelle and frequently heard on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. The choir will be performing three movements from Requiem for a Sailor, the choral work that Barnard has been composing during the last two years. Also, Bernard is a finalist in the 25th annual Ithaca College Choral Composition Contest and Festival. His composition, Three Short Choral Works on Texts by E. E. Cummings, will be performed by the Dorman High School Choir from Roebuck, S.C. at the festival on November 13. Five other choirs will each present works from the other finalists. Dr. Eric Corty, associate professor of psychology, completed a statistics text while on sabbatical last year. He has a contract with Elsevier for publication in 2006. His book will be titled Using and Interpreting Statistics: A Practical Text for the Health, Social, and Behavioral Sciences.
Dr. Peter B. Southard, assistant professor of management, has had an article, "A Survey of Online E-Banking Retail Initiatives," published in the October 2004 issue of Communications of the ACM, Volume 47, Issue no. 10, pp. 99-102.
Dr. Syed Saad Andaleeb, professor of marketing, and a former student, Carolyn Conway, had their article, "Customer Satisfaction in the Restaurant Industry: An Examination of the Transaction-Specific Model," accepted for publication in the Journal of Services Marketing. Conway worked on the restaurant service project for independent study credit.
Dr. Dawn Blasko and Dr. Victoria Kazmerski, associate professors of psychology, coauthored an article with Dr. Albert Katz of the University of Western Ontario. "Saying What You Don't Mean: Sarcastic Language Pprocessing" was published in the October 2004 issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science.
Dr. Jeffrey Pinto, professor of management, is the co-editor of a book, The Wiley Guide to Managing Projects, which was published this summer. His co-editor is Peter Morris of University College London. Also, his book The Project Management Handbook, originally published by Jossey-Bass, was translated into Russian and published this year.
An article by Dr. Blair Tuttle, assistant professor of physics, was published in September in Physical Review B, a publication of the American Physical Society. The article is titled "Theoretical Investigation of the Valence-Bond Offset between Si(001) and Si02."
Dr. Mary Ellen Bayuk, college registrar, Jane Brady, assistant director of Admissions and Financial Aid, and Mary-Ellen Madigan, director of Admissions and Financial Aid, did a presentation at the Penn State Enrollment Management and Administration Fall Conference held at The Penn Stater Conference Center September 20-21. The title of the presentation was "Countdown to Census Date: Moving Student to Registered Status."
Dr. Roger Knacke, director of the School of Science and professor of physics and astronomy, and Dr. Darren Williams, associate professor of physics and astronomy, had their article, "Looking for Planetary Moons in the Spectra of Distant Jupiters," published in Astrobiology, Vol. 4, No. 3, 400-403 (2004).
Amanda Knerr, associate director for Student Affairs, presented "Hidden Rules: Learning to Build Bridges for Students from Poverty," at the annual Pennsylvania College Personnel Conference in Harrisburg October 4.
Dr. James A. Kurre, associate professor of economics and co-director of the Economic Research Institute of Erie, has been elected to the board of directors of the Association for University Business and Economic Research (AUBER) for a two-year term. AUBER is composed of research units like the Economic Research Institute of Erie (ERIE) from universities large and small around the country. ERIE has been a member of AUBER for two years. His term begins with the annual meeting, which is October 17-20 in Tucson, Arizona.
Dr. Greg Morris, professor of American literature, was an invited participant in a roundtable discussion titled "Literature in the Big Sky: New Theoretical and Critical Perspectives," which took place at the Western Literature Association Conference held in Big Timber, Montana, September 29-October 3. His presentation was titled: "Writing New-Western Historical Fiction: The Work of Peter Bowen."
Dr. Pam Silver, associate professor of biology, had her article, "Habitat Partitioning by Chironomid Larvae in Arrays of Leaf Patches in Streams," published in North American Benthological Society, Vol. 23, No. 4, 467-479 (2004). Her co-authors are Catherine Brown McCall and David Wooster.
Gary Walker, lecturer in computer science, has had his article, "Experimentation in the Computer Programming Lab," accepted for publication in Inroads: The ACM SIGCSE Bulletin. The article is scheduled for publication in the 2004 December issue.
Congratulations to Harry Blount, maintenance mechanic, who celebrated 25 years of service to Penn State Behrend on September 24.
Dr. Martin Kociolek, assistant professor of chemistry, had his article, "Ring Opening of 3-Bromo-2-Isoxazolines to β-Hydroxy Nitriles," published in Synthetic Communications, Vol. 34, No. 23, 1-8 (2004). His co-author is Kyle B. Kalbarczyk.
David A. Waples, lecturer in communication, has had three books published by iUniverse, Inc. The first, Approaching Infinity: A Practical Workbook to Help Us Achieve Our Goals in Life, is a nonfiction, goal-setting workbook. The others, both novels, include the inspirational Piano Dreams, and White Widow, a political suspense story. Waples also announced the upcoming publication of his nonfiction history book, The Natural Gas Industry in Appalachia, to be released by McFarland Publishing in spring 2005. Dr. Ralph M. Ford, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, had his article, "Fuzzy Logic Methods for Video Shot Boundary Detection and Classification," published in the book Intelligent Multimedia with Soft Computing (Springer-Verlag, 2004).
Congratulations to Patty Mrozowski, staff assistant in the Lilley Library, who celebrates 25 years of service to Penn State Behrend on October 29.
Welcome to Matt Trimble, newly appointed project engineer in the Plastics Technology Center. He earned bachelor's degrees in both plastics engineering technology and mechanical engineering technology at Penn State Behrend, where he is currently completing his master's in manufacturing systems engineering.
