Charles Burchard, senior lecturer in computer science, traveled to Alma, Michigan, June 13-18 to participate in an NSF workshop, LEGO Mindstorms in Computing Curricula.

Douglas Charles, visiting lecturer in history, had an article published in this month's Intelligence and National Security. His article, titled "Before the Colonel Arrived: Hoover, Donovan, Roosevelt and the Origins of American Central Intelligence, 1940-41," reinterprets the orthodox interpretation of the origins of the CIA.

Mary Connerty, lecturer in English, presented "Variation in L2 Learning: Generation 1.5 Students vs. International Students," on May 13 at the Center for English Language Studies, University of Birmingham, in the United Kingdom.

Chris Coulston, associate professor of electrical, computer, and software engineering, recently had his paper, "Electronic Angle Measurement," published in the June 2005 issue of Circuit Cellar. The article describes the construction of an embedded system to make highly accurate angle measurements using a solid state accelerometer.

Antonella Cupillari, associate professor of mathematics, traveled to the University of Waterloo in Canada to attend a joint meeting of the Canadian Mathematics Society and the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathematics June 3-6. While there she presented a paper titled "The Sixty-fourth Article of the Instituzioni Analitiche."

George Dudas, instructor in computer science, and Ron Delporto and Gary Walker, lecturers in computer science, attended the class "Using Access, SQL Server, SQL, and XML in Your Database Courses" June 2-4 at the University of Dayton Chautauqua Institute.

Tony Foyle, assistant professor of geology, and Kevin Norton, lecturer in geology, traveled to Hornafjörôur, Iceland, to attend the 2005 International Global Symposium. While there they presented a paper, "Historic Sediment Dispersal Along Open-lake Shoreface and Protected Back-bay Environments, Presque Isle, PA: Natural and Anthropogenic Influences." Norton also served as an advisor on a student paper. Foyle's travel was funded in part by the Great Lakes Commission.

Condolences to his wife, Marcia, and to friends of John N. Grode, who died Saturday, June 11, at his home in Surprise, Arizona. John was a 1966 graduate of Penn State and taught engineering at Penn State Behrend from 1966 until his retirement in 1997. In addition to receiving the Council of Fellows Excellence in Teaching Award and the Guy W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Academic Advising, John received the Richard Dill Award for service to Behrend Athletics. For many years he was Behrend's faculty representative to the NCAA and for nearly a decade he served as our representative to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Giselle Hudson, staff assistant in Financial Aid, was elected to serve as a member of the board of directors for the National Association of Veterans Program Administrators (NAVPA) for the coming year. Founded in 1975, NAVPA addresses education and other areas of opportunity for veterans, as well as professional development for Veterans Program Administrators.

Men's Soccer Coach Dan Perritano recently traveled and coached the NCAA Division III Select Team on a tour of Brazil. Three Behrend players participated on the team, which played five games and toured the southeastern part of the country.

Mary Beth Pinto, associate professor of marketing, Diane Parente, associate professor of management, and Phylis Mansfield, assistant professor of marketing, had their paper, "Information Learned from Socialization Agents: Its Relationship to Credit Card Usage," published in the Volume 34 of the Family and Consumer Science Research Journal.

Mary Beth Pinto, associate professor of marketing, and Phylis Mansfield, assistant professor of marketing, have had their paper, "Direct Mail Credit Card Solicitation of College Students: An Exploratory Study," accepted for publication in the Service Marketing Quarterly.

Clare Porac, professor of psychology, attended the meetings of the Canadian Psychological Association in Montreal, Quebec, held June 10-12. While there she presented a paper titled "Hand Preference Consistency and Health Status in Adults Over the Age of 65." Her co-author on this paper is Dr. Alan Searleman, professor of psychology at St. Lawrence University.

Michelle Previte, assistant professor of mathematics, has had two papers accepted for publication. "The Dimensions of Limits of Vertex Replacement Rules" has been accepted by the Illinois Journal of Mathematics and "Limits of Vertex Replacement Rules" with Joe Previte and Mary Vanderschoot has been accepted for publication in Rocky Mountain Journal of Mathematics.

Blair Tuttle, assistant professor of physics, is visiting Micron Technologies in Boise, Idaho, for five weeks this summer. While there he will be working on developing microscopic models for DRAM failure.

Gary Viebranz, lecturer in music and director of instrumental ensembles, served as conductor of the 90-member All-County Senior High Band at the 56th annual Chautauqua County Music Festival. The event took place Saturday, June 4, at the Chautauqua Institution. The program included selections by William Latham, Walter Hartley, Percy Aldridge Grainger, and Leonard Bernstein.

Russ Warley, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, along with D.L. Feke and I. Manas-Zloczower, professors at Case Western Reserve University, has published a paper titled "Effect of Peroxide Crosslinking on the Dynamic Modulus of Silicone Rubber" in the Journal of Applied Polymer Science. The article will appear in the August 15 issue of the journal.

Al Warner, assistant professor of management, and Jim Fairbank, assistant professor of management, had their paper, "Managing Uncertainty in a Formal Standards-based Industry: A Real Options Perspective on Acquisition Timing," accepted for publication in the Journal of Management.
