Dr. Lawrence Downey, assistant professor of mathematics, attended an Analysis Seminar at Kent State University February 8 and 9.

Dr. Ralph M. Ford, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, presented a paper titled "A Machine Vision Technique for Glass Thickness Measurement" at the Optical Engineering Society (SPIE) conference on Machine Vision Applications for Industrial Inspection XVI on January 23 in Santa Clara, California. The paper was co-authored with former student Jeff Mercier, who is now pursuing his master's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Arizona. For also has joined the organizing committee for the Machine Vision for Industrial Applications XVII conference in 2004.

Dr. Peggy Lee, assistant professor of management, attended the Decision Sciences Institute annual meeting held in November in San Diego, California. While there she presented a paper, "Measuring Supply Chain Integration" in a session titled Supply Chain Management, which she also chaired. While there she also served as chair and presenter at an Invited Workshop on Teaching Services in an Operations Management Course. She chaired a session titled Supplier Management in Supply Chain Management, and she served on a panel that discussed selecting a first job after the Ph.D. at the Doctoral Students' Symposium. In another venue, Lee presented "Selecting and Collaborating with your Doctoral Committee" at the 2003 Achievement Conference at University Park on February 1. Penn State Erie sponsored a table at the luncheon and the conference attendance for seven undergraduate students. Andy Herrera, director of educational equity, also attended with the students.

Dr. Victoria Kazmerski and Dr. Dawn Blasko, associate professors of psychology, and Banchiamlack Dessalegn, a December 2002 graduate, have had their article, "ERP and Behavioral Evidence of Individual Differences in Metaphor Comprehension" accepted for publication in the journal, Memory and Cognition.

Lucy Lenhardt, senior research associate in plastics engineering technology, received the 2002 Member of the Year Award from the northwestern Pennsylvania section of the Society of Plastics Engineers. Currently the vice president of SPE, Lenhardt has served on the SPE board of directors for twelve years in a variety of offices. She is the first woman to receive the award, which has been given since 1967.

Rick Sawtelle, academic systems analyst in the Computer Center, attended a "UNIX and Linux Security: Hands-on" training conference, sponsored by Learning Tree. This four-day conference was held at University Park January 28-31.
