Dr. Diana Hume George, professor of English and women's studies, gave a reading and workshops at SUNY/Broome County College in Binghamton, New York. She also gave a talk titled "Writing Dangerously" and a presentation for the Coiner Memorial Program at SUNY/Binghamton in October.

Patty Pasky McMahon, coordinator of Health and Wellness Services, presented "Performing the Neurologic Assessment in the College Health Setting" at the annual Mid-Atlantic College Health meeting held in Baltimore, Maryland, in October.

Dr. Thomas Wortman, special projects assistant to the dean, was an invited panelist in the featured symposium at the International Forum of the Association for the Study of Higher Education annual meeting in Sacramento on November 21. His talk about internationalizing the curriculum was in the symposium "Comparative Perspectives for Internationalizing Universities: Toward Creative Policy Development for Students, Faculty, and Administrators."

Dr. Dawn Blasko and Dr. Victoria Kazmerski, associate professors of psychology, presented a poster at the annual meeting of the Psychonomic Society held November 21-24 in Kansas City, Missouri. The paper, titled "Metaphor Comprehension is Influenced by Semantic Distance and Working Memory," was co-authored by senior psychology major Alejandra Marroquin and recent graduate Matthew Stevenson.

Dr. Chris Coulston, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, presented the paper "Ants and Evolution: The Non-uniform Steiner Minimal Tree Problem" at the Artificial Neural Networks in Engineering Conference on November 9 in St. Louis, Missouri. The paper was co-authored with Matt Smith and Katrina Werger, both former Behrend students and Schreyer scholars. The paper was the first runner-up for the Best Theoretical Developments in Computational Intelligence Award at the conference.

Congratulations to Anne Danielski, coastal education and maritime specialist with Pennsylvania Sea Grant and director of the Environmental Rediscoveries program. Environmental Rediscoveries was chosen by a local committee of the Pennsylvania Coastal Zone Management Agency as the top priority for federal Coastal Zone Management funding.

Dr. Diana Hume George, professor of English and women's studies, has had two articles accepted for publication. "Traveling the Road Less Traveled" will be published in the January 2003 issue of Kaleidoscope Magazine. "When No Means Yes," an article on sexual harassment policies, will be published in Associated Writing Programs' Writers' Chronicle and Job List, Spring 2003.

Dr. Robert Gray, assistant professor of engineering, has registered his second patent, titled "Method for Data Exchange with a Mobile Asset Considering Communication Link Quality." Gray's patent includes the integration of a global positioning system (GPS), geographic information systems (GIS), and electromagnetic field strength measurements from locomotive field tests to optimize the efficiencies of packet data wireless transmissions. Co-inventors of the patent are two GE researchers, Dave Davenport and Juan Lauger-Diaz, GE Corporate Research and Development, Schenectady, New York. Gray is also the director of the Center for Navigation, Communication, and Onformation Systems (CNCIS), Pennsylvania Transportation Institute, University Park, Pennsylvania

Robert Nelson, lecturer in MIS and computer science, had his article "Teaching ERP and Business Processes Using SAP Software" published in the November 2002 issue of Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS). The article provides an overview of an introductory course which teaches Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) concepts and business processes.

Dr. Charisse Nixon, instructor in psychology, gave an invited presentation titled "Girls and Relationships: A Gender-responsive Approach to Aggression" at the Second Annual Girls Summit, sponsored by the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice and Georgia Women's Legislative Caucus. The summit was held November 14 and 15 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Joseph E. Paullet, associate professor of mathematics, and Dr. Joseph Previte, assistant professor of mathematics, had their paper, "A Lokta-Volterra Three-species Food Chain," published in the October 2002 issue of Mathematics Magazine. The paper was also co-authored by Erica Chauvet and Zac Walls, two students who took part in this year's NSF-sponsored Summer Program in Mathematical Biology.

Dr. Peter B. Southard, assistant professor of management, presented "Using a Demand Knowledge to Reduce Costs in a Service Delivery System: An Application of Discrete Event Simunlation to a Service Delivery Problem" at the thirty-third annual meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute, held November 23-26 in San Diego, Califonia.

Dr. James Turso, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, presented "Smart Materials-Based Structural Vibration Isolation for Minimizing Product Quality Variation Using H-Infinity Based Optimal Control" at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition on November 18th in New Orleans. LA. The paper was co-authored by Dr. John Roth, assistant professor of mechanical engineering.
