Grant Subsidizes Canadian Education Abroad Experience
A grant from the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the International Council for Canadian Studies will subsidize housing and excursion costs for Penn State students studying in Toronto this summer.
The first ten students to register for North American Politics will receive $200 towards their housing at Ryerson University in downtown Toronto, reducing the cost to approximately $580, depending on the exchange rate. The grant also will fund excursions for all students to the Royal Ontario Museum, which is famous for its collection of artifacts from ancient civilizations, Fort York, and one or two additional sites.
North American Politics (PL SC 299 or PL SC 499) is a Penn State Education Abroad program open to students University-wide. It is team-taught by Robert Speel, associate professor of political science at Penn State Behrend, and Gregory Inwood, professor of politics and public administration at Ryerson. The course is offered during Penn State Behrend’s four-week summer session, May 12 to June 6.
Grading for PL SC 299 is based on exams and class participation. PL SC 499 requires a research paper. Both are 3-credit courses that fulfill Penn State’s International Cultures general education requirement and many major- or minor-specific education abroad requirements. Classes meet Monday through Thursday afternoons, with weekends free for exploration of Toronto.
“Because Ryerson students also are enrolled in the course, this is a great opportunity for Penn State students to meet their Canadian contemporaries and exchange perspectives on political issues and attitudes in both a classroom and residential setting,” Speel said. “When I first taught this course two years ago we had lively discussions on issues such as U.S. and Canadian involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, abortion, drug control and gay marriage policies, border security, control of Arctic resources, and the differences between a parliamentary and presidential system of government.”
Penn State students will live next door to a supermarket and less than two blocks from the Eaton Centre shopping complex and the Yonge Street commercial district. A subway stop at the Ryerson campus connects students to the city’s Beaches neighborhood, the trendy Queen Street West district, upscale Bloor Street, and Chinatown.
For additional information about this Penn State Education Abroad opportunity or for application materials, e-mail Robert Speel at rws15@psu.edu or telephone at 814-898-6206. The deadline to apply for the course is March 21.
