Welcome

The Department of Chemistry at The University of Alabama offers degrees in chemistry at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. We are a growing program with 22 faculty and approximately 80 graduate students. Research and teaching are conducted in the major disciplines of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistries and biochemistry. In addition, chemistry faculty actively participate in interdisciplinary scientific research programs involving synthesis, the chemistry of materials, biological chemistry, and environmental chemistry.

Departmental News

Rick Smith has received the J. Allen Alexander award, which is the highest recognition given by the American Scientific Glassblowers' Society. UA Press release.

The Department is pleased to welcome a new class of 19 graduate students this fall.

Dr. John Vincent will replace Dr. Dave Dixon as interim department chair. Dr. Carolyn Cassady is stepping down as Director of Graduate Recruiting. Dr. Shane Street will replace Dr. Cassady and Dr. Stephen Woski will replace Dr. Street as Director of Graduate Studies. The Department thanks Dr. Dixon and Dr. Cassady for their service in these positions.

Congratulations to chemistry students who received degrees during the August Commencement Ceremony.

The department is pleased to welcome Dr. Shanlin Pan and Dr. Thomas Vaid, who will be joining the faculty this summer.

Chemistry major Rebecca Long was one of two UA students to receive the prestigious Hollings scholarship sponsored by NOAA. UA press release.

Congratulations to chemistry department students who received degrees in the May commencement ceremony.

Congratulations to our students who received departmental, college, and university honors during Honor's week festivities.

Dr. Greg Szulczewski received the Outstanding Committment to Students award during the college's honors award ceremony.

Six chemistry department students were awarded the Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award. The recipients were Kevin Anderson, Keith Bentley, Denise Boykin, Jackson Switzer, and Andrew Vincent. Kevin Anderson also received the Computer Based Honors Fellowship.

Chemistry department students swept the University level awards for Excellence in Research by a Doctoral Student and Masters Student. Dr. Marcin Smiglak won the dissertation research award and Corey Hines was the recipient of the masters research award. Both students worked for Dr. Rogers. Dr. Andrei Honciuc won college outstanding dissertation award for his work with Dr. Metzger

Senior Chemistry majors Samantha Mroczynski and Kristin Rogers were on the winning team in the Alabama Launchpad Business Plan Competition. The team earned $100,000 to help establish their start-up business. UA press release

Twenty-four chemistry majors were inducted into the UA chapter of Gamma Sigma Epsilon, which is a national chemistry honorary society.

Prof. Peter Stang from the University of Utah presented the inaugural Anthony J. Arduengo, III Lecture on March 6th and 7th.
