While the College of Arts and Sciences has the expansive array of academic programs to be expected from a major research university, it also offers students the advantages of a smaller college through its learning communities, freshman interest groups, and the opportunity for individualized learning that occurs in undergraduate research and creative activities.
The Blount Undergraduate Initiative is an extraordinary opportunity for Arts and Sciences students. This four-year academic program begins with a freshman residency in the Blount Living-Learning Center, involves unique freshman and upper-level courses designed especially for Blount students, and is compatible with New College and other A&S majors, and with other University programs and activities, including University Honors, Computer-based Honors, and International Honors.

This living-learning community is for entering freshmen in the College of Arts and Sciences. As a living-learning community, the program blends a student’s academic and residential experiences. This means that Arts and Sciences’ freshmen in Harris Hall see familiar faces, those of other students with whom they live, when they attend their freshman composition and other classes. The Harris students also can talk in the comfort of their own residence hall with a college academic advisor and get help with classes and academic planning. Each student in this program has a faculty mentor to help in the transition to University life. The program emphasizes involvement in the cultural life of the campus and the development of successful academic behaviors. The Harris community particularly seeks to attract students with interest in the pre-professional areas such as pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-optometry, and pre-law.

This new University-wide program is available to Arts and Sciences students. First-semester freshmen take several courses related to an interest and meet with faculty who share their interest. Topics range from creativity to global awareness to film and science and mathematics. These are good ways to meet new friends and to have a place to bring study in different areas together.
