“Strangers”
I can measure my summer in a number of ways: the seeds I planted, the vegetables I consumed, the amount of hours I worked, or the money I spent on overpriced New England toll roads. Scouring through my pictures, however, I notice that the two months and 4,189 miles I devoted to learning about how to grow food are more accurately defined by the people I encountered. These photos are of the people who treated me like a long lost friend instead of the stranger I actually was. They are farmers, children, hippies, intellects, local eccentrics, spiritual leaders, artists, and activists—but above all, they are all teachers. Each one introduced me to a new lifestyle. They taught me about simplistic living, food philosophies, and Buddhist meditation. They took me on bike excursions, accepted carrots as currency, and taught me dumpster diving strategies. They showed me how to make hula-hoops and shared the best places to watch the sun set.
I stayed no longer than two weeks in any given place, doing some sort of farm related work in exchange for sleeping arrangements and access to the harvest. I was in a constant state of arrival and departure; I integrated into a routine and then quietly disappeared. It’s strange and sad to think that, with perhaps a few exceptions, I’ll never see the people in these photos again. These are the strangers who planted seeds within me.
