How to Apply

Please apply directly through the University of Alabama Graduate School. Application material may be requested by mail, email, or found on their website. In addition to their requirements, the Department of American Studies may have additional requirements or necessary application materials.  Please complete our information request form and we will mail you a packet containing more information about our department and any additional application requirements.

In order to be considered for full financial aid, please complete and submit applications by February 1.  Afterward, incoming applications will be decided on a rolling basis.  We usually admit a class of 7-10 students per academic year.

The Department of American Studies considers several factors for admission into the M.A. program: transcripts, recommendation letters, a statement of purpose, and test scores.  The statement of purpose must include a detailed reason for entering into an American Studies program.  Additionally, all first-year M.A. students will be required to research and write a major colloquium paper over the course of two semesters.  The statement of purpose should include a specific area of interest on which candidates would like to base their research projects.
