Dean Olin is the chief academic officer for the College and oversees the academic and financial management of the College. The College has an annual budget in excess of $38 million and has 6,500 students, and 400 faculty and staff. Olin is known nationally for his innovative implementation of technology in service to education. Under his leadership, UA’s College of Arts and Sciences opened the Mathematics Technology Learning Center, a 240-computer math learning community designed to remove traditional obstacles to undergraduate learning of math.
He is a recent winner of the Virginia B. Smith Innovative Leadership Award, jointly presented by the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning and the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated leadership and innovation in American higher education. He is also a member of the Committee on Undergraduate Science Education, one of the standing boards in the National Research Council’s Center for Education, and of the Steering Committee on Criteria and Benchmarks for Increased Learning in Undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Olin is the author of numerous scholarly papers in the fields of operator theory and functional analysis, and he has had over 20 years of continuous research funding. Previously, Olin was professor and head of the department of mathematics at Virginia Tech where he founded the Mathematics Emporium, which has received national recognition. He has served as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at The University of Alabama since 2000. Olin received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1970 from Ottawa University in Kansas and a doctorate in mathematics in 1975 from Indiana University in Bloomington.
Tom Wolfe

Tom Wolfe handles faculty development in the Dean’s Office and coordinates matters for the College’s fine and performing arts and humanities departments. Wolfe is director of jazz studies in the School of Music and a Leadership Board Faculty Fellow in The College of Arts and Sciences. As a performer and recording artist, Wolfe has been a recipient of many honors including an Alabama State Council on the Arts Fellowship and an appointment as a Kennedy Center/U.S. State Department Jazz Ambassador. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Capital University and a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music. Wolfe has been a member of the University faculty since 1994.

Dr. Carmen Burkhalter handles personnel, technology and affirmative action matters in the Dean’s Office and coordinates academic and operational issues for the College’s social science departments. She is an associate professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders and specializes in pediatric audiology. She has been a faculty member at the University since 1993 and has served as a program director and clinical supervisor of the master’s degree program in audiology. In 1994, Burkhalter received the Department of Communicative Disorders Tommy Russell Award for Academic and Service Excellence in Graduate Studies. A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Burkhalter received her master’s and doctoral degrees from The University of Alabama and a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology from Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina.

Dr. Jimmy Williams handles matters relating to diversity awareness, minority advocacy, multicultural affairs, and recruitment and retention of minority faculty, staff and students. Williams is an associate professor in the department of criminal justice and previously served as chair of that department. He has also served as chair of the College’s diversity committee and interim chair of the department of communicative disorders. In 1999, Williams was selected as a Fellow for the American Council on Education. Williams received his master’s and doctoral degrees from Florida State University and has been employed by the University for 15 years.
Dr. Milton Ward

Dr. Milton Ward works with matters of research, budget, planning, and graduate education. He also coordinates academic and operational matters for the College’s science and math departments. Dean Ward is the point of contact for the Science Olympiad high school competition, and research contracts and grants within the College. A professor of biological sciences, he conducts research in the ecology of rivers, streams and wetlands. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology from The University of Alabama and his doctorate in entomology from Michigan State University. He has been employed at the University since 1981.

Dr. Beverly Roskos-Ewoldsen coordinates academic and operational issues for the College’s social science departments, including interdisciplinary studies. She also coordinates the Learner Centered College Initiative. Roskos-Ewoldsen is an associate professor in the department of psychology and specializes in visual-spatial cognition. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on statistics, perception and visual-spatial cognition. She has been the lead faculty member on grants from Office of Naval Research, National Institute on Drug Abuse, and National Science Foundation. Roskos-Ewoldsen received a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University, a doctorate from Indiana University, and post-doctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University. She joined the faculty at The University of Alabama in 1991.

Don Hays works exclusively for the Dean of the College in matters of External Affairs. He has held several positions at the University including director of development for the College, director of alumni, assistant vice president for development and acting vice president for development. He has also served as executive director for the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority and as a development representative for the Alabama Development Office. Hays holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The University of Alabama.

Cathy is the Human Resources/Resolutions Official for The College of Arts and Sciences. She also is the Affirmative Action Coordinator for the College and works on climate enhancement initiatives. She is the College’s point of contact for crisis intervention for the University’s Judicial Affairs, Police Department, and the Counseling Center. Cathy has been a faculty member at the College, where she also teaches Asian art history, since 1993.

Julia Griffith is the first point of contact for answering questions about the policies and procedures in the Office of the Dean. She serves as liaison between the dean and department chairpersons and faculty. She also works with the dean and assistant deans, as well as support staff, in dealing with tenure and promotion matters, sabbatical applications and departmental annual reports. She convenes weekly meetings for the dean and staff members and informs them of upcoming deadlines, maintains college records, and assists with development seminars and training sessions. Julia received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Mississippi State University and has been employed in the Office of the Dean since October 2007.

Sonya Jones assists Dean Benson in the coordination of Barry M. Goldwater applications and Regional Science Olympiad, Dean Wolfe with faculty development and Dean Taylor with sexual harassment issues. She schedules academic misconduct appointments and processes change of grade requests, as well as faculty interim term teaching proposals and contracts. Sonya is the point of contact for the National Endowment for the Humanities summer stipend applications process and nominations of College and University graduate student awards. She is also responsible for coordinating sabbaticals. Sonya has been employed by The College of Arts and Sciences since January 2002.

Denise Nelson works with Dean Benson and Dean Williams. She assists in coordination of affirmative action and hiring matters, contracts and grants, monthly reports, adjunct appointments, teacher course evaluations, retention, tenure and promotions, departmental annual reports, faculty activity reports, diversity committee matters, and minority student and faculty recruitment. She is the point of contact for temporary faculty hiring process and graduate teaching assistant tuition waivers. She has been employed by The University of Alabama since January 2002 and with The College of Arts and Sciences since October of 2004.

Morgan Lacey Leathers is the first person you are likely to see in the Dean’s office. She greets and directs students, parents, faculty, staff, and donors in person and via telephone and e-mail. She provides clerical support for the dean and his executive staff, including typing correspondence, data entry, scheduling appointments and events, and receiving and sending faxes and mail. Morgan is the Dean’s office liaison to the secretary for Phi Beta Kappa honorary society and also works with the College’s Office of Development and Public Relations in special events and scholarship management. Morgan received her Associates of Applied Sciences in Office Administration from Walters State Community College of Tennessee in May of 2007. She has been employed by the Dean’s office since January 2008.
