For most people, the idea of cutting yourself is incomprehensible.  But for an estimated two to three million Americans, self-injury helps them feel calm and in control. The majority of people who self-injure are women between the ages of 13 and 30, but there are "cutters" of every age, gender, and economic group. How does cutting start and where can cutters turn for help?

State of the University 2007

Exposure to a severely traumatic event can cause nightmares, flashbacks and difficulty sleeping.  For most people, these post-traumatic symptoms disappear over time. For others, the symptoms become chronic and lead to PTSD.
