Both the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) and the Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS) are designed for returning adults. A student needs at least 60 college credits or an associate’s degree from a degree granting regionally accredited college to be considered for admission to the program. 

Admission Requirements

1. An associate's degree from a degree granting regionally accredited college or university, or at least 60 college credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0 from a regionally accredited college or university.

2. An interview with an academic counselor.

3. Official transcripts from all high schools and degree granting regionally accredited colleges and universities previously attended.

4. Completion of the BGS or the BPS Application and submission of application fee (if applicable).

5. Students applying who have graduated from a Connecticut Community College since 2000 are guaranteed admission into either the BGS or the BPS programs and have the $95 application fee waived.

Requirements for the Degree Completion Programs for both Bachelor of General Studies and Bachelor of Professional Studies

1. Earn a minimum of 120 credits towards graduation

2. Fulfill the University of Connecticut General Education Requirements

3. Earn 30 or more credits at the University of Connecticut

4. Earn 30 or more credits at the 2000-level or above from either courses taken at the University of Connecticut or courses that transferred at that level into the University of Connecticut.

5. Students who complete a school change from another school or college at the University of Connecticut into either the BGS or the BPS programs must complete at least 15 credits as a BGS/BPS student.

6.  A University of Connecticut grade point average of at least 2.0.

7. A student in a degree completion program is expected to complete degree requirements within eight years of admission unless an extension of time to complete the program is given. The Director of the Degree Completion Programs should give the permission.

Writing in the Major.  The University’s writing requirement can be met by any 2000-level or above W course approved for a BGS Theme or a BPS Concentration.

Information Literacy.  Students in the degree completion programs fulfill this competency area through successful completion of the program’s requirements.

Degree: Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) Requirements
Major: Interdisciplinary

BGS students may complete a general interdisciplinary plan of study without a theme or follow an approved plan of study with a theme. BGS students build academic rigor in their studies by selecting courses from a minimum of three academic units. The required BGS capstone experience provides the mechanism which allows students to demonstrate interdisciplinary knowledge from their course of study. The BGS program is offered at all six undergraduate campuses of the university. Courses are available in the day, evening, weekends and online.

1.  Students must complete one of these 18 credit degree options using University of Connecticut courses only (15 credits from a or b or c and 3 credits from 2 below).

a.  A general interdisciplinary plan of study of 15 credits at the 2000-level or above with courses selected from a minimum of three different academic units.

b.  A specific interdisciplinary theme of 15 credits at the 2000-level or above that has been pre-approved for the student’s campus or online

c.  An individualized interdisciplinary theme of 15 credits at the 2000-level or above approved by a faculty oversight committee composed of three faculty at the student’s campus. 

2.  All three options identified above require an integrative capstone experience of 3 credits (integrating general studies course, summary project, or an approved academic unit course). 

Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS) Requirements
Major: Professional Studies

BPS students must select one of the following five concentrations: Web Technology, Occupational Safety and Health, Organizational Studies, Employment and Labor Studies, or Nonprofit Leadership.

Each concentration consists of five core courses (a minimum of 15 credits) and four related courses (a minimum of 12 credits).

BPS Core – Required Courses for all Concentrations: GPS 3100, 3300, and a capstone course in collaborative leadership. Students may not transfer in any of these required courses.

BPS Concentration in Web Technology

Required Courses: ISKM 4140, 4130, 4120, 3220, and 3241

Related Courses: 12 credits which may be selected from the following pre-approved courses: ISKM 3110*, 3112*, 3120*, 3222, 3240*, 3260, 4195, 4199; COMM 3600, 4220W, 4650; MKTG 3665; Any 3000 or 4000 level BADM, CSE, or OPIM (maximum of 6 total credits in any one area); or other courses as approved by the academic advisor. Prerequisites may be required for specific courses. *May be required as preparation for concentration course courses.

BPS Concentration in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)

Required Courses: AH 2001; OSH 3570, 3571, 3573, 3574, and 4221W

Related Courses: 6 credits chosen from: OSH 3278, 3173, 3174, 3270, 3277W, or 4570 and 6 credits chosen from: AH 3101, 3175, 3203, 3231, 3234, 4244; HRM 3204 or 3266; or other courses as approved by the academic counselor.

BPS Concentration in Organizational Studies

Students should talk to their academic counselor to determine if they may be eligible to receive a minor in Business Fundamentals offered by the School of Business or a concentration in Organizational Studies.

Required courses: 15 credits must be chosen from: ACCT 2101 or BADM 2710; BLAW 3175 or BADM 3720; FNCE 3101 or BADM 3730; MGMT 3101 or BADM 3740; MKTG 3101 or BADM 3750; OPIM 3103 or BADM 3760; OPIM 3104 or BADM 3761.

Related courses: 12 credits which may be selected from the following pre-approved courses: Any upper level School of Business course; Any upper level ECON course; COMM 3100, 3200, 4220W, 4230, 4800; OSH 3570, 3573, 3574; PSYC 2600, 3600; SOCI 3411; WGSS 3264; or other courses as approved by the academic counselor.

The Organizational Studies courses are only available at the University’s campuses located in Greater Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury. Torrington Regional Campus and Avery Point Regional Campus students will be required to travel to another convenient campus.

Please note: Students may take no more than 30 credits in a single academic unit except for the School of Business where a student may take no more than 24 credits of 2000/3000/4000 level business courses (this includes credits from 2000/3000/4000 level courses accepted in transfer as well as those taken through the School of Business at the University of Connecticut.)

BPS Concentration in Employment and Labor Studies

Required courses: 9 credits of the following courses: HRM 3221, 3266, 3261. 6 credits from the following courses: HRM 3204, 3263; OSH 3570.

Related courses: 12 credits which may be selected from a pre-approved list of courses: ECON 2441, 2444, 2446; PSYC 2600; SOCI 3411, 3451, 3459; WGSS 3264; HRM 3220, 3222, 3263, 3264, 3265; or other courses as approved by the academic counselor.

BPS Concentration in Nonprofit Leadership

Required courses: GPS 3204, 3209, 3210, 3211, and 3212.

Related courses: 12 credits selected from a pre-approved list of courses: GPS 3242, 3243; AH 4244; COMM 3200, 3450, 4230, 4460; SOCI 3421, 3425; WGSS 2267, 3264 or other courses approved by the academic counselor.
