Connecting Students to Academic Success

The Academic Link connects students to academic success by providing the academic support that fosters the acquisition of the critical learning skills that make students better learners. The Link’s free services include academic success coaching; one-on-one, group, and online tutoring; and math, science, and writing walk-in tutoring centers.

One-on-One/Group Tutoring

The one-on-one/group tutoring program provides individual and group tutoring services for students who seek intensive, ongoing assistance in a particular course. The one-on-one/group program goal is to provide assistance to any student who requests it in any subject.

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring at The Academic Link is available by appointment during regular business hours (see below) to any student who needs assistance with any VWCC course. Tutoring sessions are delivered through Blackboard Collaborate, which has audio, video, and screen-sharing capabilities.

The Math Center

The Math Center is a walk-in service where students can get immediate individual help with mathematics in most math and some science courses on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Science Center

The Science Center is a walk-in tutoring service where Virginia Western students can get immediate, individual assistance for biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology courses on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Writing Center

The Writing Center is a walk-in tutoring service where students can get help with writing assignments from any course in all stages of the writing process—from invention strategies to critiquing a rough draft or finished text. Students are served in the Writing Center in half-hour increments on a first-come, first-served basis.

Academic Success Coaching

Academic Success Coaches work with students to develop skills and proficiencies necessary for academic success. All students who request an individual or group tutor are required to schedule a 45-minute coaching session on a topic of their choice. Topics include test-taking strategies, time management, learning styles interpretation, etc. Coaching sessions, however, are not limited to students who request a tutor. Any VWCC student can schedule a session.
