The School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (LASS) was created in January 2010 as the result of a merger between the former Humanities and Social Science divisions. LASS houses a diverse group of departments and programs.
Our departments include Administration of Justice, Art, Communication Studies and Theatre, Early Childhood Development, Economics, English, Foreign Language, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Human Services, Music, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

Virginia Western is a great place to begin your career in Science or Mathematics. The Associate of Science Degree in Science is specifically designed to transfer. The Associate Degree can serve as the foundation for a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Physics, Mathematics, or serve as the foundation for pursuit of degrees in medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, or other healthcare fields. Guaranteed admissions agreements with Virginia public and private colleges and universities provide a wide variety of choices for degree completion.
Virginia Western also offers a variety of restricted admissions programs leading to licensure or certification in Nursing, Practical Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Radiography, and Radiation Oncology. These programs prepare graduates to provide high quality patient care and graduates enjoy high earning potential, job mobility, and flexible employment hours. Additionally, the college offers distance learning programs in Surgical Technology in collaboration with Piedmont Virginia Community College and Veterinary Technology in collaboration with Blue Ridge Community College.
