Alabama Triathletes is a sport club whose goal is to introduce the student population at The University of Alabama to the sport of triathlon. Triathlon is a sport that includes swimming, cycling, and running combined in one event. Members of Alabama Triathletes not only train and compete in triathlons, but also open running, cycling, and swimming competitions. In addition, members may also train and compete in duathlons (run and cycle), aquabikes (swim and cycle), or any combination of multi-sport events. Alabama Triathletes is a USA Triathlon (USAT) registered club.
Any UA student interested in exercise and living a healthy lifestyle is highly encouraged to join Alabama Triathletes. Alabama Triathletes are a group of highly motivated individuals who feel that triathlon is a sport for everyone. Members come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some members come from high school swimming, track, or cross country programs who want to keep their level of fitness and are looking to fulfill their need for competition. Other members have no background in swimming, cycling, and running but are willing to accept the challenge of learning and training for triathlons. Current members include individuals ranging from those who have never competed in a triathlon to those who have completed 30+ triathlons and multi-sport events varying from sprint to iron distances.
Alabama Triathletes competes in the USAT SECTC (South Eastern Collegiate Triathlon Conference). This conference includes all universities in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina, and the Florida Pan-handle. The SECTC competition season starts on August 1st, 2007 and ends at the USAT Collegiate Nationals, or another SECTC race soon after Collegiate Nationals. In the Fall semester of the 2007/2008 academic year there will be four SECTC races, and three SECTC races in the Spring semester, in addition to USAT Collegiate Nationals. In order to race in the SECTC, athletes must hold a USAT yearly membership. We encourage our members to participate in local triathlons, open running events, open cycling events, and open swimming events that are not USAT events.

A Collegiate Nationals plug...
For the past 2 years, The University of Alabama was the host of the USAT Collegiate National Triathlon Championships. In both 2007 and 2008, this event was a huge success, drawing over 1000 collegiate athletes to Tuscaloosa to race on a challenging olympic distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) course. In 2007, 46 teams were represented with the United States Naval Academy winning both the overall male and female team awards. Alabama triathletes finished 16th in 2007, a huge success for our first year! In 2008, the United States Naval Academy took first once again, and Alabama Triathletes bumped up to 14th.
