ONLINE TUTORING
Instructors: get the grading toolbar macro for MS Word!
HCC is proud to announce the expansion of the Online Tutoring Center. You can now get help in math and science as well as with papers. Additional subjects will be brought on line over the next year. Check the Announcements for new information. Please read the following details about the different components.
Writing Center
Students, please note: You may submit papers for review through the “ ASK” system at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Your papers will be read and marked by a tutor and returned in 6 to 24 hours. Check the Announcements board to see if there is a CHAT session scheduled if you have questions for which you would an immediate answer.
What is Online Tutoring?
Online tutoring isn’t just for English Classes. Students in almost every discipline at HCC can benefit from our on-line writing tutoring system. Papers reviewed by tutors will be clearly marked, but marking will be done in Microsoft Word format and may not be visible with other word processors. All HCCS open student computer labs have Microsoft Word installed for your convenience.
Students can log onto the tutoring site any time of the day or night and upload a draft of their paper or retrieve one that has been reviewed by a tutor.
What Tutors WILL Do:
• Read a student’s paper and make suggestions regarding grammar, style, usage, and academic writing requirements.
• Go over the instructor’s assignment with the student to make sure the student understands what needs to be done.
• Make critical comments on portions of the text (generally the first page for early drafts).
• Advise the student regarding appropriate use of research materials.
What Tutors WILL NOT Do:
• Grade a student’s paper.
• Write a student’s paper.
• Rewrite any portions of a student’s paper.
• Assess the level of a student’s learning or understanding of the course material (tutors are writing specialists, and may not be familiar with the content of a particular course).
Math/Science Center
Currently, students in any Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Math course can ask questions about specific problems from your textbooks or general concepts. Tutors will respond within 24 hours with examples, explanations, and suggestions for additional resources, if appropriate.
What Tutors WILL Do:
• Check your work to see if you understand the basic process for solving the problem.
• Solve one problem, going through all the steps in the process.
• Explain the concepts behind the problem you submit.
What Tutors WILL NOT Do:
• Grade your work or tell you what grade you should get.
• Solve multiple problems from the same exercise.
What will I need to work with an online tutor?
· You will need access to a computer and to the Internet. Your computer must have a Javascript-enabled browser.
· You must use Microsoft Word or a word processor that will allow you to read MS Word documents. If you upload a file that our tutors cannot open, they will return it to you unread.
· You must have a current HCCS student ID number. You cannot register with Askonline without this. This is to be entered in the COMMENT box on the registration page.
· You should have a copy of your assignment in MS Word format, a link to the assignment’s online posting, or be able to clearly explain the assignment in your original message. If you have contact information for your professor, it would be helpful if you included it in your first message as well.
If you are ready to work, click on the login button below and register with the Askonline tutoring center.
