Safe Zone
Mission
The mission of the Safe Zone Program is to make Clemson University a more welcoming and inclusive place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students, staff, and faculty. To that end, the program offers workshops to increase awareness and understanding of LGBT issues and to train allies to stand with, and advocate for, LGBT people.
History
Clemson's Safe Zone Program was created in 2003 in response to requests from students and staff who saw the need to create at Clemson a more welcoming environment for LGBT people. They pointed to the Safe Zone programs at colleges and universities across the country. A task force of students, staff, faculty and administrators was formed to develop a model for the Clemson community.
Initially the program was simply one comprehensive workshop to train caring allies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people on campus. In 2004-2005 we revised and expanded the program to include both an “Introduction to LGBT Issues” workshop and a “Safe Zone Workshop.”
