I am honored to congratulate the twenty winners, students and tutors, of the 2012 Spotlight Literacy Awards, said White. Many literacy students have overcome tremendous personal difficulties and obstacles to reach this level of achievement. I am also very proud to recognize the tutors for their generosity and encouragement in helping their literacy students achieve their utmost potential. Students and tutors are nominated by the local providers who receive literacy grant funding from the Secretary of State/Illinois State Library Literacy Office. Each year ten students and ten tutors are honored. Students received a $200 check from the Illinois Press Association Foundation, a congratulatory plaque and personalized Illinois Blue Book from Secretary White. Ms. Gercken, of Thornton, is a 2011 returning adult graduate of SSC who is now pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Development at Governor's State University. She has worked as a volunteer in SSC's Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program since the program began nearly two years ago. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Professors in my early childhood education classes are always emphasizing how one person can make a difference in a child's life, said Gercken. Being recognized with this award has made me feel like I have made a difference. Last year adult literacy programs that received grant funding provided educational services to 20,837 adult students. A total of 8,193 volunteer tutors statewide provided instruction to help students develop and enhance their reading, writing, math and language skills. SSC's Office of Community Education is currently seeking families to take advantage of their Wild Summer Family Reading Program. This summer reading program gives families the opportunity to close the educational gap for students who struggle with reading and will give families the opportunity to make reading a fun family activity. It is completely free of charge to participating families, and runs from July 3 - 31, 2012. This project was made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.
