Young Global Citizens Summit

The first ever British Council Young Global Citizens Summit took place at Bhubaneswar comprise of 115 schools participated. The objective of the camp was to set up Global Citizens club to reach out the community. 6 UK partner organisations took part in the delivery of the summit.

British Council Sport Leadership Camp:24 - 26 Feb 2012

The First British Council Youth Sport Leadership Camp in partnership with Abhinav Bindra Foundation, associate partners FICCI and Special Olympics Bharat at the Commonwealth Thyagraj Stadium from February 24th – 26th, 2012 . The Camp was kicked off by Indian Football Star Baichung Butia and guest of Honor at the closing ceremony was Olympic Gold Medallist Abhinav Bindra. Through the camp young people and their teachers engaged in experiential learning and development through games and sport using skills like teamwork, planning, decision making, time management there by promoting the values of respect, fair play, equity and inclusion. Highlight of the camp were the mix of differently abled and abled children from State, Private and Special schools.

Kolkata Goalz launches tournament

The Kolkata Goalz Cup 2012 tournament was launched at the Mohammedan Sporting Club ground, Maidan Tent, Kolkata Friday 2 March 2012. The tournament was kicked off by Sir Vernon Ellis, Chair of British Council and Shri Sultan Ahmed, President, Mohammedan Sporting Club and Minister of State for Tourism, Government of India in the presence of other dignitaries from Kolkata Police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, All India Football Federation and Indian Football Association (West Bengal) and the six Kolkata Premier League Football Clubs - Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, East Bengal Club, George Telegraph Sports Club, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Police Athletic Club and United Sports Club. The tournament involves the youngsters who have been trained under Kolkata Goalz: A Premier Skills project delivered in partnership with the above organisations, which uses football to bring communities together and engage young people in a range of constructive activities.

Re-Imagine India UK Cultural Relations

Re-Imagine: India-UK Cultural Relations in the 21st Century is a one year research and dialogue initiative of the British Council, King's India Institute and Counterpoint. The shared history between India and the UK is rich and important, and the past offers a strong platform for building upon in the future. But the relationship is changing, as are geopolitical strategies and priorities. There is no overarching vision of where the relationship stands today or how it will develop. We face a unique opportunity to seize the moment and re-imagine a mutually beneficial relationship that values the past while seeking to define the future for these two countries together in the 21st century.

Dickens 2012

Dickens 2012 is British Council’s initiative to celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of Charles Dickens. To celebrate the bicentenary in India, the British Council presented a range of activities. The British Council Reading Room at the Kolkata Book Fair was held from 26-31 January 2012. It was inaugurated on 26 January by Vikram Seth and with a dramatised reading by Charlotte Cooke. In collaboration with Kolkata Literary Meet and Penguin India, the reading room was the space where we will housed a special collection of works by Charles Dickens on the occasion of his bicentenary celebrations. There were a range of activities for young people over the six days, including a poetry reading session by Ian Brown and Alan Riach, visits by eminent UK and Indian authors including Craig Taylor and John Keay.

Kolkata Goalz: A Premier Skills project inspired by Kickz

The launch of Kolkata Goalz by the Premier League, the British Council, Kolkata Police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, All India Football Federation and Indian Football Association (West Bengal).This was in association with six Kolkata Premier League Football Clubs who are directly involved in the delivery of the project. The six Premier League Clubs are Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, East Bengal Club, George Telegraph Sports Club, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Police Athletic Club and United Sports Club. The children’s charity Future Hope, who are dedicated to giving the street children of today a better tomorrow, support the project in an advisory capacity.

Debating Matters India - 2008

Debating Matters is an exciting new national school debate that has been initiated by the British Council, in partnership with the Institute of Ideas of London, as part of its Intercultural Dialogue Project. It is a debating competition with a difference for high schools students. In India the competition will be for Class XI students only. Competing schools will vie for the top prize of an opportunity to debate with the UK Debating Matters champion school in London in July 2009. Debating Matters is a very successful schools debate competition in the UK, pioneered by the Institute of Ideas and supported by Pfizer, in the UK and in India.
