As of January 2012, NYPA has provided over $173.3 million in benefits to Western New York in support of its operating License for the Niagara Power Project. These benefits include monetary payments to settlement partners consisting of local municipalities, state agencies, an Indian nation, school districts, and committees supporting the development of the Niagara River Greenway. The amount also includes payments by NYPA for the construction of recreational projects and ecological enhancements related to the License. In addition to monetary benefits, 32 MW of low-cost hydropower has been allocated to several settlement partners saving the recipients as much as 75% of the cost of energy.

A new chapter in the life of NYPA’s Niagara Power Project has begun with a new 50-year license, which took effect on Sept. 1, 2007. This website will provide updates on the many activities that NYPA is implementing in Western New York as a result of this new license and provide a forum for community input into the process.
In approving the new Niagara license, a decision that was announced in March of 2007, members of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) said they were ensuring that a valuable source of low-cost power for Western New York will continue operating for another half-century with improved environmental protections and recreational benefits that will be provided by NYPA.
As part of the relicensing process, NYPA completed an Applicant-Prepared Environmental Assessment for federal and state regulators. The multi-year process also resulted in a comprehensive settlement agreement that resolved a variety of issues among local stakeholders involved with the Niagara project relicensing.
However, there is still much work to be done by the Power Authority and Western New York stakeholders during this implementation phase. We invite you to stay current on the latest developments by using this website.
