GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida Performing Arts presents a new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” at 7:30 p.m. April 23 at the Phillips Center for Performing Arts.

Based on the 2008 Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production and directed by Bartlett Sher, “South Pacific” is set on a tropical island during World War II. The musical tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples – U.S. Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque, and Navy airman Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat – and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of war and by their own prejudices.

The beloved score’s songs include “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair,” “This Nearly Was Mine” and “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.”

Tickets range from $40-60 ($20 for UF students).
