Pedestrian Safety

In any new country, the roads can be dangerous for pedestrians … so …
Even for those not driving it is important to be aware that traffic may be approaching from unexpected directions.

Although, apart from motorways, it’s not illegal to cross the road at any point it is advisable to use crossings, some of them controlled by traffic lights, whenever you can.You may cross the road when the green man is showing but, if the light is flashing, don’t start to cross.

There are crossing points known as Zebra crossings which have black and white road markings and orange flashing beacons at each side of the road. Drivers should give way to pedestrians on the crossing, but you should be careful as there are no red traffic lights instructing drivers to stop.

Don’t forget, pedestrians are not allowed to walk along or cross any motorway at any time.

Hi,
In France it is quite similar than in the UK. Furthermore, when using an uncontrolled zebra crossing  a pedestrian has the priority on the vehicle just by the fact of putting a foot on the passage. The vehicle must stop! But, of course if you want to stay alive, it is recommended to be very cautious. Paying attention to the driver's attitude before crossing is preferable!

I am tropical fruit in Japan. Circumstances of roads may different between in Japan and in UK. There is no beacon here. We cross crossing usually, but almost of all of them has a signal. In the video of this page, there are only a walking-man-shape signal on the low place which only pedestrians can check,
in our country, a signal showing a green or red man is on the high place of the other side of the road which we can watch. And, there, drivers can watch their signal above the roads where they can watch it in their car.
We can cross any place of roads basically, but it is safer to cross any crossings, because the traffic is very busy usually.
Some signals are push-button style, that is a form that pedestrians have to push it if they want to cross the crossings. Otherwise, the signal in front of them remains to show a red-stopping man, then they having to wait all the time. And, how long time they waited for, the signal wouldn't change from red to blue, if they don't push the button.

very nice traffic rules & obey d citizens .superp...

Hi,i am jimmy from indonesia,we have a big problem because most people do not respect the pedestrian and the rule of law on the rights of pedestrians in our country is less well implemented.

Here in Brazil generally speaking, there's no respect for pedestrians, it is necessary to have traffic lights in every street, otherwise pedestrians cannot cross them.  Additionally, depending of the time of the day and location where the traffic light is, it is likely that drivers will not stop at the red light.  It's a real shame.

Hello from Mexico. Over here in spite of the fact that we have traffic laws unfortunately most people do not follow them.It is incredible to realize that when most people do not follow the rules, you really find yourself having a hard time trying to follow them.

salam,I am living in Algeria and we have a big  problems about crossing the roads
because we don't respect the laws about it

Hi, I am Karthik, an Indian. In my country only people in the metropolitan cities follow these rules whereas people in type-2 cities may not follow traffic rules.

Hello, I am Lilit.  In Armenia we don't have beacons, they are funny. There are too many car accidents on the roads nowadays in Yerevan, and there are mostly 19-20 years' old drivers.

I don't know why drivers don't respect the traffic rules. in spite of everyday the broadcast anonnuced about  that .
