Banking

If you are resident you will find it useful to open a bank account. All the large banks and most building societies have a network of branches across the country and all offer similar services.

A visit to any one of them will be a friendly experience, although to open an account, be prepared to prove your identity in a number of ways. You will find your passport useful, but the bank will also want to see some form of proof that you are living where you say you are. This can be proved by a housing rent book, a Council Tax, water or electricity bill for the property, as long as it’s in your name. In the bank, and elsewhere, you may hear the term ‘utility bill’ – this simply refers to bills relating to the provision of services to your property such as electricity, gas, water and telephone.

There are other local facilities such as credit unions where you can save your money and have access to affordable low cost loans. Where they exist in your local area, contact details can be obtained from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

Hello everyone;
Thank you for sharing about the bank system in you country;
I would like to ask you to explain me:
how people can get to use: Pay online with credit card?
if I am in africa and someone wants to pay using credit card how can he send money and how will I receive the money?  I oftern see people going on internet and fill some code N° but I don't understand?
Is this system more secure?
what the are the positive and negative impacts  for this? for both sides.
what about the charges; the bank comission?

Many thanks for your help.
P.s: I am in Rwanda and this system is not very known.

In my country it is easy to open a bank account, but it is certainly not easy to have access to afordable low cost loans.
If you want to open a bank account you need two things. Firstly, you have to prove your identity providing your ID or your passport if you are a foreigner. And secondly, you need at least 100.000 pesos or 100 USD.
On the other hand, if you want to have access to loans you need to have enough money in your bank account in order to guarantee the debt you will have to pay in the future. When I say enough money” I mean “a lot of money” which doesn’t make any sense to me because if you already had enough money in your bank account, why would you need a loan? That's why in my country many people use other institutions such as credit unions or even loans from their own relatives.

Hello lecorrea,

Thanks for letting us know about banks and loans in Colombia. Opening a bank account sounds easy. In my experience, banks are usually quite friendly to English teachers!

As you say, Colombian banks don't seem to make it easy to get a loan.

Perhaps other countries also have alternatives to bank loans? We've heard from Ukraine, Serbia, China, Indonesia, and others, too! Tell us about your country; over to you, LearnEnglish users!

In my country is quite easy to open a bank account, after you fill in form to request for opening account and meet the terms of bank. Each bank has its own policy.
People don't have much confidence in banks here, but  they still  have a credit and debit cards, loans, and so on. As days go by, interest rates are getting higher and higher, so people haven't enough money to pay their debts.

I don't think so it

I am impressed.

I am deffinetly think about loans that it is not a good idea to get it especially for a long time as it will be necessary if you decide to buy a flat or a house. Here in Bulgaria the interests are so high (I think), you will pay three times more than the amount you have got. I have bachelor degree of bank deal but still did not work in this field. May be this is wrong but anyway I like my job now. I hate to tempt people to do something what will make them unhappy after while.  I think it is great that we can write in english somewhere like this place and by this way we are increase our skills.

In my country, it's not difficult to open a bank account. In fact, many people have more than just one bank account.

Take myself for example, I have as many as 7, mostly because when I change job to a new company, that company might do business with a bank different from my previous one. That means I have to open a new bank account in which the salary can be saved directly.
