The Inaugural Lillian Stone Distinguished Lecture in Environmental Policy: "The Changing Face of Nature Conservation," with Kathryn Fuller
Kathryn Fuller is chair of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and serves on the board of both the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Alcoa. She is president emerita and honorary board member of the World Wildlife Fund. She was chair of the Ford Foundation from 2004-10. Earlier, she held several positions in the Justice Department, culminating as chief of the Wildlife and Marine Resources Section. A reception will take place before and after the talk.

Professor Garrett will discuss "End of its Rope: Why is the American Death Penalty Dying?" with students who sign up in advance at lawevents@virginia.edu. The American death penalty is disappearing. Why is this decline occurring at the same time across states with different death penalty statutes and procedures? Garrett is interested in pursuing a project on the topic, beginning with a detailed analysis of Virginia cases. The project may expand further to Texas and other states.

Our Soldiers Speak: Commander of the IDF's International Law Department Speaks About International Military Force
Lt. Col. Dr. Shamir-Borer holds a doctorate from NYU and is an active, serving member of the international law branch of the Israeli Defense Forces. He is intimately involved in the planning and implementation of military operations. He will present on the subject of “the legal challenges of asymmetrical warfare.” In this presentation he will analyze and outline the legal merits and demerits of the prosecution of wars by western democracies when faced by non-state actors. Shamir-Borer will highlight and outline aspects of the subject matter that are common to those challenges faced by the U.S. military in recent years.
