UVA Law professor A.E. Dick Howard will address how the Magna Carta has left an indelible mark on American constitutionalism. Carried to America with the first colonial charters, the Magna Carta was invoked by Americans who objected to British policies on the eve of revolution. The Magna Carta's legacy in America includes the rule of law, constitutional supremacy, due process of law, and the idea of an organic, evolving constitution. Dan Bruner, director of legal services at Whitman-Walker Health, will speak about HIV/AIDS law and policy. Whitman-Walker Health is a community-based nonprofit health clinic in Washington, D.C., with a mission to help people living with HIV and in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. International Court of Justice Judge Joan E. Donoghue will deliver the lecture, "Inside the World Court: The Influence of Common Law and Civil Law Traditions." Donoghue has represented the United States on the International Court of Justice since September 2010. She previously served as the principal deputy legal adviser to the U.S. Department of State (2007-10), the senior career attorney at the agency.
