Russia: Legal, Political, and International Issues Post-Ukraine
The Cold War may be over, but U.S.-Russia relations are currently very icy. The Russian Federation, with its massive nuclear arsenal and Vladimir Putin's idiosyncratic leadership, has continued to assert its strength and relevance in the international system. An interdisciplinary panel will discuss the current state of the Russian Federation, including Western sanctions, falling oil prices, turbulent relations with the United States, military involvement in Ukraine, and Putin's domestic leadership. The panelists are Professor Paul Stephan from the Law School, Professor Yuri Urbanovich from UVA's Department of Slavic Languages and Literature, Professor Allen Lynch from UVA's Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics, and Richard Dean, a partner at the Washington, D.C., office of Baker & McKenzie, specializing in the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and guest lecturer at UVA Law School. Food will be provided.

Jean Pictet International Humanitarian Law Competition Semifinals and Final Round
The Jean-Pictet Competition involves dozens of student teams from around the world working through a scenario of international armed conflict between fictitious countries. It requires participants to demonstrate not only their knowledge of international humanitarian law, but also their ability to apply the law in a wide range of situations. The semi-finals, to be held in the morning, and the final round, to be held in the afternoon, will be open to the public. Last year in Portugal, a team of three UVA law students won the competition. A full schedule will be announced during the opening ceremony on March 28, and details will be available at www.law.virginia.edu.

2015 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Law Lecture with Judge Joan E. Donoghue of the International Court of Justice
International Court of Justice Judge Joan E. Donoghue will deliver the lecture, "Inside the World Court: The Influence of Common Law and Civil Law Traditions." Donoghue has represented the United States on the International Court of Justice since September 2010. She previously served as the principal deputy legal adviser to the U.S. Department of State (2007-10), the senior career attorney at the agency. In that role she advised Secretary Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama on all aspects of international law.

"The Four Women Justices": A talk by Dahlia Lithwick, Supreme Court Reporter at Slate
Dahlia Lithwick is a senior editor at Slate who is working on a book about the four female U.S. Supreme Court justices. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Harper’s, The New Yorker, The Washington Post and Commentary, among other places. She won a 2013 National Magazine Award for her columns on the Affordable Care Act. She has been twice awarded an Online Journalism Award for her legal commentary and was the first online journalist invited to be on the Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press. Lithwick has testified before Congress about access to justice in the era of the Roberts Court. She has appeared on CNN, ABC and The Colbert Report, and is a frequent guest on The Rachel Maddow Show. The 23rd National Security Law Institute will take place May 31 through June 12. The National Security Law Institute provides advanced training for professors of law and political science who teach or are preparing to teach graduate-level courses in national security law or related subjects requiring a detailed understanding of National Security Law. Applications are also invited from government attorneys in the national security community who are actively engaged in the practice of national security law or otherwise have a professional need for such training.
