NetBadge

NetBadge is not a UVa computing account in itself. Instead, it verifies your identity as a valid user of a UVa website or online resource using either:

• your personal digital certificate or
• your UVa computing ID and password from one of several UVa computing accounts you might hold.

• First, know that you can probably use your personal digital certificate to log into NetBadge without a password (a faster, more secure option, anyway).
• But you may need to use your ID and password on a compatible system to log into NetBadge occasionally, so to change a password you use for NetBadge, log into the Manage Your Passwords & Personal Security Questions tool.
• Note: You’ll need to provide your 9-digit University ID number (printed on your UVa ID card, or look it up if needed); plus the answer to one of your personal security questions set during the ID verification process.

Applicant System

A Temporary password given to applicants for admission through the SIS (applicants for admission and newly admitted students only)

• Go to the Temporary Password Request page to generate another Temporary password. You must know your UVa computing ID and SIS ID number (or retrieve these IDs now) to do this.
• Note: This password is only provisional and provides limited access to UVa systems and resources (typically, from when you apply for admission through Summer Orientation). For full-fledged access to UVa resources (including wireless), you must complete the new student in-person identity verification process and set a Permanent password.

blue.unix

For logging into UNIX clusters, research computing clusters, and for posting to www.virginia.edu, people.virginia.edu, and other websites hosted on ITS UNIX or Linux Web server clusters, such as faculty.virginia.edu or indorgs.virginia.edu (faculty, staff, students)

• If you completed your in-person identity verification (all students and most employees): Reset (and optionally synchronize) your passwords by going to the Manage Your Passwords & Personal Security Questions tool, which includes your blue.unix password. (You may need to log into NetBadge using your personal digital certificate in order to access this tool.)
• If you did not: Contact ISPRO Access Management.
• Want to change your password without going through NetBadge? To reset, use the passwd command at a UNIX prompt. (You must know your old password in order to do this.)

Central Mail Service (CMS)

UVa’s legacy homegrown email service provider (faculty/staff only)

• If you completed your in-person identity verification: Reset (and optionally synchronize) your passwords by going to the Manage Your Passwords & Security Questions tool, which includes your CMS password.
• If you did not: Contact ISPRO Access Management.
• Want to change your password within WebMail? (You must know your old password in order to do this.) Go to the UVa Email Switchboard (select your CMS account if necessary) and log into WebMail through NetBadge. Click on the Settings tab, then click on the Change Password link on the left under CMS Settings and follow the instructions.

Eservices

For logging into public computers, networked printing, the UVa Exchange Service (shared UVa calendaring), Premium Server clients, administrative operations, SharePoint (faculty, staff, students)

• If you completed your in-person identity verification (all students and most employees): Reset (and optionally synchronize) your passwords by going to the Manage Your Passwords & Personal Security Questions tool, which includes your Eservices password.
• If you did not: Contact ISPRO Access Management.

UVa Exchange Service

UVa’s centralized calendar system for employees, which integrates with email, mobile devices, and SharePoint (faculty and staff only)

• Change your Eservices password, following the Eservices instructions directly above.

Google (UVa Gmail)

UVa email provider (students and alumni primarily)

• If you access your UVa Gmail account online via the UVa Email Switchboard: Reset (and optionally synchronize) the password(s) you use for NetBadge by going to the Manage Your Passwords & Personal Security Questions tool.
• If you access your UVa Gmail account via your smartphone, mobile device, or in an email program on your computer: Use the appropriate IMAP/POP settings. (See also the FAQ, How do I access my UVa email account on my smartphone or mobile device?)

Home Directory Service

Online file storage for backup copies of your important academic files, and access to Web publishing (faculty, staff, students)

• If you access Home Directory via software on your own computer: Change your Eservices password.
• If you access Home Directory online via the Home Directory Service Web interface: Change your blue.unix password.

Permanent Password

For all who have completed in-person identity verification (optional for faculty and staff, required for all students since Fall 2009)

• Reset (and optionally synchronize) your passwords by going to the Manage Your Passwords & Personal Security Questions tool, which includes your Permanent password.

Proxy Server

For accessing restricted resources (such as library journals and Software Central downloads) remotely/from off-Grounds (faculty, staff, students, guests)

• If you are a member of the UVa community: No special configuration or proxy account required. Just change one of your passwords associated with NetBadge for proxy sign-in.
• If you are not a member of the UVa community: If you are allowed proxy service access but lack credentials for NetBadge, an alternate login method will ask for other identifying information. Need assistance with creating your proxy account? Contact ISPRO Access Management.

SharePoint

Microsoft portal for document management and collaboration online (faculty, staff, students)

• Change your Eservices password.

Student Information System (SIS)

UVa’s online system for applications to the University; the official course catalog; course enrollment; grades; official and unofficial transcript requests; and financial aid information and tuition payment (faculty, staff, students, applicants for admission, and newly admitted students)

• Current faculty, staff, or students: Change one of your passwords associated with NetBadge.
• Applicants for admission & newly admitted students: Go to the Temporary Password Request page to generate another Temporary password. You must know your UVa computing ID and SIS ID number (or retrieve these IDs now) to do this. Note: This option is for those who have not yet completed the new student identity verification process and set a Permanent password.

Temporary Password

A provisional password (applicants for admission and newly admitted students only)

• Go to the Temporary Password Request page to generate another Temporary password. You must know your UVa computing ID and SIS ID number (or retrieve these IDs now) to do this.
• Note: This password is only provisional and provides limited access to UVa systems and resources (typically, from when you apply for admission through Summer Orientation). UVaCollab

Course management, online collaborations, and personal file storage through “My Workspace” (faculty, staff, students, guests)

• If you log into UVaCollab using NetBadge: Change one of your passwords associated with NetBadge.
• If you log into UVaCollab using an external, non-UVa account (the “Other Login” option): Go to UVaCollab Lost Passwords.

UVa Hive

Provides virtualized access to licensed, specialized software (faculty, staff, students)

• Change your Eservices password.

UVaAnywhere & UVaAnywhere-Lite (VPN)

For accessing restricted resources (such as library journals and Software Central downloads) remotely as if on the UVa network (faculty, staff, students)

• Download and install a new personal digital certificate.

Faculty Web Server

For faculty.virginia.edu websites

• If you use SFTP (secure FTP) or secure logins to manage: Change your blue.unix password.
• If you use Home Directory, map network drive, or Connect to Server to make an SMB connection to the site: Change your Eservices password.

Independent Organizations Web Server

For indorgs.virginia.edu websites

• If you use SFTP (secure FTP) or secure logins to manage: Change your blue.unix password.
