During the times they are rebooting, network traffic will not go through them. Existing connections might be dropped and new connections through the rebooting router will not be made during the actual reboot times. We do not expect the network to be out for the entire reserved time, most interruptions will be 5 minutes or less. Buildings with a single backbone connection will loose their connectivity. Windows machines that are not up to date with patches also enable the virus to propagate over a network. This virus uses complex algorithms to spread not only from machine to machine, but across networks as well. Conficker is spreading fast, with an estimated 2.4 million infected machines growing to over 9 million machines in just four days.   What is also allowing this virus to spread so easily through USB drives is that an infected virus will change the autorun screen when a USB drive is inserted. It is far easier to see what is happening than to explain it through text, so visiting this page: <<a href="http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001586.html">http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001586.html</a>> and warning users about the altered menu prompt is important. The user still has to click on the renamed menu option in order for Conficker to be installed, but this social engineering trick increases the likelihood of a user accidentally installing the virus.   Recommendations: - - Run Windows Update immediately and make sure that all patches are up to date. - - Disable the autorun feature in Windows if you have not already. - - Be careful when using any removable media. If you see the message "Open folders to view files" appear twice after inserting the portable drive, odds are very high that the portable drive is infected. Reformat the portable drive. - - If your machine is infected, please follow the aforementioned removal steps from either F-Secure or Microsoft. This will cause a network outage for all buildings fed from this node which includes the Beckman Institute (BI). Services and systems within the building that rely on external services such as authentication or Domain Name System (DNS) resolution will be unavailable.
