During 2013, Georgia College’s STEM Mini-Grants Program celebrated five years of research funding at its annual STEM Symposium. The program supports projects that aim to advance innovative teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dr. Dave Bachoon, professor of biological and environmental sciences, was one of ten scientists and economists invited to a three-day meeting on coral reef restoration at the Atlanta Aquarium. Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet and are shrinking at an alarming rate. Bachoon was the only microbiologist selected to attend because of his recent research on water pollution in the Caribbean. The participants discussed options available to investigate what is killing the reefs and how to save them. They also considered funding priorities for future research projects.

During the 2012-2013 academic year, volunteer group Georgia College Miracle and students Ashley Pittman and Courtney LaHatte became recipients of former President George H. W. Bush’s Daily Point of Light Award. The award honors individuals or groups across America who have created meaningful change in their communities.

During 2013, the university’s Bobcat Brass Quintet performed at the Georgia Music Educator’s Association In-Service Conference in Savannah. The experience became the first time an ensemble of all Georgia College students were invited to perform.

During the 2012-2013 academic year, artwork of Michael Murphy, Georgia College assistant art professor, graced the pages of TIME’s Person of the Year edition — the second time the artist has been featured in the magazine.

Dr. Frank Lowney, projects coordinator of Digital Innovation Group at Georgia College, published “The Coming ePublishing Revolution in Higher Education” using technology iBooks Author. The e-book explores the electronic publishing revolution of academic articles, books and textbooks.

During 2012, Georgia College sophomore Allison Blachard published her first novel, “Forget Me Not.” Published by Martin Sisters Publishing, the book is a paranormal romance novel about two young adults entangled in secret legends of Chippewa Native Americans.

Dr. Bob Duesing, professor of management at Georgia College, became Outstanding Faculty of the Year by Georgia WebMBA® for Cohort 28. Duesing received the 2011-2012 award during the annual WebMBA® faculty retreat.

Dr. Mark Huddle, assistant professor in the History, Geography and Philosophy department, recently spoke during the Roosevelt Reading Festival at Franklin Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, N.Y. Huddle spoke about his book, Roi Ottley's World War II: The Lost Diary of an African American Journalist, published in 2001.

Dr. Jeffrey Blick's recent archaeological research in the Bahamas appears in the publication, "Human Impacts on a Small Island Ecosystem: Lessons from the Lucayans of San Salvador, Bahamas for This Island Earth," as Chapter 7 in The Functioning of Ecosystems (2012). The anthropology professor and Dr. Eric Kjellmark of Florida Southern College, Lakeland, Fla., gained a permit from Gerace Research Centre to conduct lake sediment cores on San Salvador, researching the effects of climate change and human impacts on the island during the prehistoric period, ca. 1000 B.C.-A.D. 1492, up to the English colonial period, ca. 1780.
