The $112 billion — which is equivalent to the state budget for New York — stems from "increased taxpayer expenditures" for anti-poverty, criminal justice and education programs, and lower levels of taxes paid by people whose "adult productivity has been negatively affected by increased childhood poverty caused by family fragmentation," says Benjamin Scafidi, an economics professor at Georgia College & State University and principal investigator of the report.

Georgia College holds 2008 Commencements
Georgia College & State University announce both graduate and undergraduate 2008 Commencement exercises.

Graduate students will receive their degrees during Graduate Commencement at 7 p.m. Friday on the front lawn of Georgia College.

Undergraduate students will receive their degrees during Undergraduate Commencement at 9 a.m. Saturday on the front lawn of Georgia College.

Auditions set for Milledgeville Idol
GCSU Department of Continuing Education will host its first Milledgeville Idol contest Aug. 22 in Russell Auditorium.

Auditions will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 19, 20 and 22 in Chappell Hall, room 107.

who has just published two books. Of War and Women, Oppression and Optimism follows his previous bench-mark studies of the African Novel and continues to break new ground by insisting that African literature is properly understood within an African aesthetic and sense of history, not by the imposition of Western critical categories.

In Knowledge Is More Than Mere Words, Palmer and a colleague have collected essays on the literature of Sierra Leone, Palmer’s native country. Both are published in both the United States and Eritrea by Africa World Press.

for her award-winning recipes judged during the recently Strawberry Festival in Reynolds. Her strawberry Grand Marnier Brownie cups earned first place and her Strawberry Lemondade Cheesecaake took third place.
• Congratulations to
GCSU freshman Shaun Terry for winning and earning the title Champion of the High Noon Racquetball Tournament held April 18 and 19 at the Centennial Center. Terry earned the title in true shootout fashion, winning the tie-breaking third game 15 to 13. Proceeds from the tournament are donated in Warren Dawson's name to American Cancer Society.
• Congratulations to Scott Dillard
, associate professor of speech in the department of English, Speech & Journalism, recently received the Performance Studies Scholar of the Year award presented by Performance Studies Division of the Southern States Communication Association.

This award recognized Dillard's service to the academic and non academic communities as well as his scholarly and artistic contributions.
• Congratulations to Lindsay Gordon
, a sophomore biology major, who has been selected as one of the 12 students from a pool of 100 undergraduate students who applied to NSF funded REU program at the department of biochemistry and genetics for summer 2008 at Clemson University.

GCSU graduate overcomes Hurricane Katrina
Hailing from the great state of Illinois, Kristin Fadeley always hoped to attend school in the South, saying “Chicago is just too cold.”

Her wish came true in fall 2004 when she began classes at Tulane University in New Orleans.

“It was great,” she says, “until the hurricanes rolled through.”

Grant receives Georgia College Staff Excellence Award
Joseph Grant has been awarded the university’s Staff Excellence Award for the spring 2008 semester.

Grant, who serves on GCSU’s Public Safety team, was nominated by members of his department and was selected by an awards committee.

The award recognizes individuals “who consistently exceed their job responsibilities and are an asset to Georgia College & State University.”

GCSU students land jobs at Robins AFB
The Robins Air Force Base Employment Office confirmed that 14 current and former GCSU students were competitively selected for federal civil service positions.

Base officials interviewed Georgia College students and alumni from the main campus, Macon and Robins AFB centers, as well as 3 other USG institutions – Macon State College, Fort Valley State University, and Georgia Southern. Georgia College students captured almost two-thirds of the 22 positions.

Georgia College presents Georgia Green art exhibition
GCSU Museum is pleased to present the exhibition, "Georgia Green: Eco-Art from the Peach State," through June 8.

This interdisciplinary visual arts exhibition focuses on contemporary artists living in the State of Georgia for whom ecological responsibility and environmental awareness play a significant role in their artworks and their lives. In keeping with the relevance of this topic, the exhibition will take place both inside and outside of the GCSU Museum’s Entry Gallery.
