Hewlett Grants FAQ

Research travel grants, made available to regular, tenure-line faculty, will again be offered by the office of International Programs & Studies (IPS) to be used in the summer of 2012 or parts of the 2012-2013 academic year.  Grants range from $1,000 to $4,000 per award.  The source of these funds is an endowment initiated by a grant from the Hewlett Foundation that was matched by private donations and university funds.  A committee convened by IPS will review the proposals.

These grants are intended to fund travel and related expenses outside of the United States for purposes of international research, both basic and applied.  Proposals will be judged primarily on perceived quality.  Younger scholars will be given priority, as will proposals that reflect a research effort that is part of a longer term international research program.

The definition of “international” for the grant funding purposes is somewhat elastic and will be determined in the end on a case-by-case basis.  Generally, fundable projects of international research include studies which

  1. Focus upon particular world cultural, geographical, political and/or economic areas, excluding contemporary USA;
  2. Focus upon relationships among institutions in different nations or upon diplomatic or strategic policies; or
  3. Generate international scientific or artistic data and/or analyses.

Both contemporary and historical studies are eligible.

Research travel must be for a period of at least two weeks.  Successful applicants must be employed at Illinois during the subsequent academic year, during which time recipients of grants will be expected to present results of their research travel in an appropriate forum (e.g., a brown-bag talk at the appropriate area studies center, a presentation in the department, etc.).

Funds awarded from this program may be used for travel costs, per diem, in-country expenses, and other related costs. Funds may not be used for faculty salary.

The proposal should be submitted electronically (PDF) to ips@illinois.edu by December 2, 2011. Recipients will be announced in January 2012.
